adsong - 05 Nov 2005 17:48 GMT Today is Thursday November 3rd. I just arrived home from my surgery, which was performed on Tuesday November 1. I must say that it was not as terrible as I had been told by some, especially after resigning myself to the surgery, reading as much as possible about it, working out physically, and with a positive psychological attitude in order to get through the procedure, it was not as bad as I thought it would be. I also had faith in my doctors at Sloan Kettering, and after speaking to many who have had Surgery , I now feel it was the right choice for me.
The doctor mentioned that all tests including microscopic exams of nodes, and removed prostate, plus all blood tests showed no cancer outside of the prostate, and that all nerve bundles were kept intact. I was given a course in using the Foley Catheter, Vicodin, in case of pain (which I have taken sparingly) and some stool softeners. I can eat and drink whatever I desire, obviously in moderation at this time, and will return on Monday the 14th to remove the Catheter, and obtain my post-surgery blood PSA reports. There is severeswelling around the Testes and penile area, but I am told this is normal at this time.I am doing quite a bit of walking, and then resting. My two cats, qand my Julie have been very supportive.More to come as I recuperate at home.

Dan,
Could you tell us what your plan is for further treatment? Will you be staying on Zoladex indefinitely, or do you plan to get off at some point and see what happens?

With G9 in both lobes, and with the CT scan showing what "appears" to be S.V. involvement, both the uro and the rad onc recommend a minimum of 24 months of ADT. I'm going to try and tough it out, and next year at this time, I'll step back and see where we are. ADT sucks, but in my case, I think it beats the alternative.

Ron B - 05 Nov 2005 20:00 GMT Great so far Fred, (I only realized you're Fred because of our buddy Steve K. who called you Fred. :-)
My thought...for the terribly swollen purple testicles...they suggested that I put a small dry folded towel under them for support while in bed. Not wet, cold or cool, just the support.
This helped a LOT until the fluid, that is CAUSING the soreness...begins to disperse. (3 or 4 days, for ME)
All the best,
Ron B.

I couldn't wait to get home from the hospital and get back to my "chair" (recliner) and headed right to it as soon as I got out of the car. I no sooner "inched" my way down in it, got my hose adjusted, the bag placed below "water level", the phone pulled over, the TV remote within reach, my "blankie" pull up over me and all "kicked back" ready to let the world heal me...... then, my damned cat was so glad to see me that he took one leap off the floor and landed squarely in the middle of my belly!! (Makes me nauseous even a year later remembering that pain. My neighbor remembers it, too (lol) I swear that when I look down, now, I can see a little paw track in my scar…. (lol)
After that, I pretty much kept a bed tray across my lap for a month…. But, he was a great companion for me during my recovery, too.
Try to relax, adsong - It will be over, soon… Well….. at least after they pull the cath out…

Wish you well on your recovery and be nice to your little furball.
