In an effort to reduce nighttime bathroom trips, I asked my urologist
for some samples of Flomax. I started taking it on Monday but so far
have not noticed any improvement. How long should this take?

A couple of days. Also you might ask if you can up the dosage. You might try
taking it a few hours before bed time so it is strong in you system when you
go to bed. It leaves your system in a few (12?) hours but apparently your
body has to adjust to it.

For me, it's prime purpose is to allow relaxation of the smooth muscle
and prevent blockage. It does nothing for my Nocturia. I still have 4
calls/night and in the end, I stay up.
Someone else posted here some weeks ago that even after a TURP, you
can still have Nocturia, dependent on your age and health.

Actually, I found during 11 months on the stuff that I get up _more_
times in the night with Flomax. Its purpose seems to be to relax the
smooth muscle in the area and allow freer flow. One puts up with the
nighttime interruptions in order to keep clear of the need for catheters,
was my understanding.
I was also told to make sure I took in plenty of fluids while on Flomax,
which naturally leads to more visits to the can.

I usually check my heart rate before getting out of bed in the morning.
It is usually in the low 50s. After three days on Flomax, this morning
it was 72. Also, it seems erratic - changing speed as I check it. Is
this a normal side effect?

Yes! It's on the leaflet in the package!
"WHEN SHOULD I NOT TAKE Flomax"
There are other substitutes which may lessen this SE.
viz: Minipress, Prasig, Hytrin etc.
Do you take other medications for blood pressure or thinning?

The only medication I take is once a week Fosamax. My blood pressure is
usually normal. I speed walk most days and get my heart rate up to 120.
I'll keep checking and I would hope that things will get back to normal
in a few more days.
