Since my radiation treatment I have been up every 2 hours (minimum) at
night. I've just read Palmer's Sept.17th lengty explanation on the
subject.
I was getting to the point that I was five times more tired in the
morning than when I went to bed. In my case I have to get up at 6am or
so, staying in bed any longer is painful. That sound strange I know but
that is a fact. I have a few other medical problems in addition to
prostate cancer. Some arthritis, a sinus problem and I was diagnosed
about 20 years ago with emphysema,(not bad for a life time non-smoker)
I had those problems long before the prostate cancer and I could sleep
then.
The Doctor at the Cancer Clinic, at my 6 month check up a few days ago
and 3 month Zoladex needle, put me on Terazosin 1MG for the first week
and then 2MG for two months. He thinks that might help me sleep.
Does anyone else have experience with this medication?
By the way he didn't check my PSA this time, since it was undetectable
6 and 12 months before.

Ben,
Terazosin is one of many Alpha Blockers that are prescribed for BPH and/or
high blood pressure. I currently take a similar med. Doxazosin. They work by
relaxing muscles in the bladder and prostate (if there is one). One caution
worth mentioning, unless your Dr. has told you different, is to take them in
the evening prior to bedtime as they can cause dizzieness.

Does the medication you're taking help?
Tom Cular - 31 Oct 2005 11:05 GMT
Ben,
Yes it does work, I was on it for blood pressure prior to brachytherapy.
Following the seeds, my urologist increased the dosage slightly rather than
prescribe Flowmax (another Alpha blocker) as seems to be fairly common. As I
understand it, an Alpha blocker relaxes the muscles and allows you to empty
your bladder with little or no retention so basically what happens is that
you pee once to get rid of the same volume that previously took several
trips to the john. I'm 63 and typically get up once during the night.

Ben,
I never had Terazosin but did have Flowmax. It was very helpful
to me. There was a several month period when I would have been
in some trouble without it.
If you aren't doing it, one very simple thing you might try is to keep
a urinal by the bed. I found it was easier to get back to sleep if
I didn't have to stumble into the bathroom, get chilled, flush a toilet,
and stumble back.
Good luck.
