Greetings:
I am recently diagnosed. Have a Gleason 8 (5+3), stage 2a. I'm 49 yrs
old and urologist recommends aggressive treatment either RP or
seeds+radition+hormones. So I am pursueing a 2nd opinion from Dr.
Easton from Memorial Sloan Kettering. Scardino doesn't see new patients
(or you need to be connected?). Wondering if anyone has experience with
Easton or other RP surgeons at Sloan?
Also I may need one nerve removed....I've heard they sometimes take a
piece of nerve from your ankle? Does that help?
Appreciate any input.

There have to be thousands of great surgeons associated with the NYC
hospitals that are very qualified to take care of you. Seek out several, and
take the pick of the litter. I used Dr Steckel ar North Shore and all worked
out great!

Dominic,
Sorry to hear the news. 49 years is too early to be considering these sorts
of things. But, that Gleason is scary. a 'normal' Gleason 8 (4+4) is scary
enough, but that '5' is probably going to disuade most surgeons. You did
not mention your PSA. A very low PSA might make a slight difference, but
... well ... 5 is the worst score you can get and the '3' might just mean
they didn't see enough of your prostate to find a quantity of '4' sufficient
to change your diagnosis. How many needles did they use in the biopsy?
Tread carefully, my friend.

I had one nerve removed at age 64. Erectile function came back within 6
months. You can get along fine with one nerve. I'd be concerned only with
the cancer right now.
