Had LRP surgery five weeks ago. Perineal area still tender; particularly
after sitting on hard surfaces, or for extended periods ( such as car
rides in excess of an hour ). Is this condition usual, and improve with
time ?

I had a little pain in that area but it was unclear if it was the
direct result of the surgery or getting used to sitting on a pad.
Whatever the cause, it went away after a couple of weeks.  Another
poster had an experience similar to yours about the same time as mine
(two years ago) that lasted quite a few weeks.  It eventually went
away.  Of course you should ask your doctor about it but I suspect s/he
will say it's nothing to worry about.  It takes many weeks if not
months for everything inside to heal so it isn't surprising there
continue to be aches and pains.  Us lap guys are especially prone to
this I suspect because we have no incision to focus on so we fret over
other things :))  Anyway, ask the doc but you're not alone.

I had no problems or pain ever after my LRP. It was a piece of cake for
me (obviously not for the surgeon as I was under the knife for 5.5
hours, and not for my wife who was sweating bullets during what she was
told to be a 2-3 hour procedure).  I'd talk to my surgeon and ask
him/her if there were any particular issues in the area bothering you.
There is usually some damage to the large intestine as a result of
prostate surgery but that organ has few pain cells and usually reponds
only to distention. Afetr six weeks almost all of the damage should
have healed significantly and you should be pain free.

No I am not a doctor, but I stayed last night in a Holiday Inn
Express...

The guys, as usual, gave great answers Torsk.

Though I had open RRP, you are really early at 5 weeks and this problem
doesn't seem uncommon from what the other folks here have said.

Use the foam doughnut for comfort...if your testicles are swollen or
purple...use a folded towel under them while in bed for support.

You sound right on schedule.

Pops made a cute comment about Holiday Inn.

Here's a followup:

We knew a Holiday Inn that BECAME an Express a few years ago.

Recently...it changed back to a 'regular' Holiday Inn.

I wondered if this meant that the guests became 'dumber'.

I had an RP & RC about 5 weeks ago and after getting out of the
hospital things were pretty tender for a couple weeks, possibly worse
than simply having the prostate removed because of all the
reconstruction.  My wife took me home in the car and every crack or
pebble on the road was keenly felt in the perineal area and elsewhere.
Now after 5 weeks post-op am not noticing this at all, must be getting
toughened up.

Some advocate these innertube affairs, but my visiting nurse cautioned
me that such devices (that are open in the center) can tend to make
things worse for some.  I'm now sitting on one of these buckwheat hull
filled pillows that conforms to the shape of the bottom, seems to work
pretty well.  Try different things.

And yes, I know all about the purple testicles, and all that god-awful
itching and misery.  There is a preparation called Butt Paste (Toy's R
Us has it) that seems to help, it's similar to Desetin but some claim
it applies a bit better.  Something else that helps with this is
ordinary corn startch.  Get a small bowl and a wad of cotton to dust
it on, it's very soothing (recommended by an RN).  A good cleaning
with a couple wet baby-wipe cloths followed by a liberal treatment
with cornstarch can give hours of relief.

The bad news is that it is unusual (how did you get so lucky to be one of
the exceptions?).   The good news is that it will get better over time.  In
my case it took almost three months.  I was out from work for five weeks
after open surgery, and the problem lasted at least a month after my return
to work.  I used a donut cushion, including in the car for the 45 minute+
commute.   I called the uro's office many times only to be told "it was
normal".   Normal my sore a.s (perineum to be exact).  I still do not
understand why this area hurt when the incision was in my belly???

Relax and try walking for exercise.  I used ibuprofen by the way, but I do
not remember that it really helped.

Good luck.

Me too, after 11 weeks. But I had perineal discomfort for several
months before surgery (may be nerve damage from a bike saddle), so I
don't know if it is related. As others have said, don't worry about it
at this stage.
