Steve M. - 28 Sep 2003 23:12 GMT I tried Viagra at 25mg with no results. (8 weeks post op.) This is the first experience ever with Viagra. No side effects were experienced. The literature indicates several doses may be needed before one starts to see results. Is it early to expect results after surgery? Should the next step be to move up to 50mg or continue at 25mg a few times? What dosage typically gets results?

When you get to the point where you're starting to see a little life, it will make it much better, stronger, and last longer with it. I would start with 100mg and then taper off when it's working well to save $$. Good luck!

David S. - 10 Oct 2003 01:05 GMT Congratulations on the PSA. May it stay that low for good.

I'm at the stage where I bite off a little piece.... really. After awhile we'll pass it in front of our noses for a good whiff, and see if we can get a "contact high erection". All I know is that I try to be a bigshot and go without it sometimes, and it is not nearly as good as with it, even a tiny amount.

I'm glad to hear that some of you are having success with Viagra. At almost 11 months post-op, with both nerve bundles spared, I still get *nothing* from it.

David S. - 11 Oct 2003 01:05 GMT I had ED problems going in and the Viagra, which worked fine two years ago at 50 mg., no longer gave reliable results at 100 mg. I am going to ask for a prescription for Levitra after all the Viaga is used up - I am taking 25 mg. about three times per week as a therapeutic measure. No results so far.

Unless you are older than 65, you are still in the early curve, as far as getting results. Do you practice with dry orgasms? Are you getting adequate stimulation? I was using it limp as much as humanly possible as soon as the cath was out. I think that was a big factor in my success. Have you tried the pump, etc? Use whatever you can to get it to wake up. I'm at a year post RP, and I still have a ways to go before I am what I consider to be back to normal. Don't despair, from what I have read here, it can take 2-3 years in some cases. If both nerves were spared, it's just a matter of time.

Do you [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > despair, from what I have read here, it can take 2-3 years in some cases. If > both nerves were spared, it's just a matter of time. Hi, JK.... I can have an orgasm with it limp.... and I do that at least several times a week. I was doing it everyday, but with the meds for depression, it's almost impossible to orgasm, so I don't try as often now. I have a pump, and I have used it off and on. I have injections that I use occasionally, but they are uncomfortable. I don't mean painful, as with the Caverject, that I was allergic to. But, even on a small dose that gives me a not so hard erection I still have a sensation of it being too tight... and it is curved more than before surgery. I don't think it's to the point of calling it Peyronie's, but will ask my uro when I see him next month. I take a small amount of Viagra almost every night. Without the pump or injections, I do get some fullness... but it's not firm enough to use. I have not noticed any nocturnal erections at all... not even partial ones. I will be 11 months post op next week. I have had some people tell me it took them two years before Viagra did anything for them. So I try to remain hopeful. But, right now, with these meds... there's not a whole lot of interest. I'm glad to hear you are having some success!
Take care.... MikeH

It's not like one day it jumps 50%. Although I am doing better than most at 1 year, I am just now getting a little spontaneous firmness, every once in awhile. That's new. Other than that, it takes real effort to acheive results. I expect it to keep improving for another 1-2 years. Hey .... it's beter than having cancer, right?

I have actually awakened twice with a morning erection just like in the old days. Four years post-op.
Hi Ho Silver - 29 Sep 2003 04:01 GMT I have had very good recent results with a vacuum pump. Bought at Eckerds for $99, works far better than Viagara for me. It is constructed so that the cock ring fits on the end and is slipped off at the right place after the vacuum has created the erection. Viagra still gives me too much a headache and stuffy feeling, and is of minimal benefit. Just FYI.

There was a study not long ago that indicated that men who start taking Viagra immediately after durgery and seven times more likely to regain full functioning as those who do not. Pfizer funded the study so one wonders. Nonetheless, try taking 25mg per day as therapy, not as a recreational drug. I was nearly three yerars post op when I read this but I have sine been taking 25 mg every day. Something is working. Of course, it could be just time but I don't think so. In any case if you take it regulatrly like thet then it beconmes routine and not something you do because you expect or hope to have sex.
Trouble is, it's expensive. I buy 100 mg tablets and split them, and they don't split bvery well. If you ever look at the so called discount sites for Viagra you will see that they say things like "Only $3 a dose." But what they are selling you is 100mg tabs that you then split to get a 25 mg "does." Scam!
Steve M. - 02 Oct 2003 23:47 GMT I used the study you mentioned when I asked my doctor to send a request for authorization to my insurance company for nine months of Viagra. The doctor's assistant asked for guidance in writing the letter, so I outlined a complete letter from the doctor to my insurance company. It covered the recommendation for Viagra as post operative treatment for a period of up to nine months to enhance recovery. I heard from the assistant that the insurance had agreed to cover the Viagra for up to the nine month period! It never hurts to ask particularly when it is justified. Others out there who have recently had the surgery should ask their surgeon to send a request for authorization when the insurance company does not normally cover the medication. An insurance agent suggested this procedure to me when I called to inquire. Steve M. Until the US gets some way of providing affordable healthcare, i refuse to get ripped off and pay $10 a pill... what a joke when it costs pennies to make.
