Urine Smell

More on the title in a sec but first...

great to hear Curt playing a better game of golf, good luck to Howie
(you're NOT an old fart) on his PSA test, continuing recovery to David
S. after AMS800 surgery and Tdub after stricture work.

Also, good thoughts  to others in the middle of,  or just starting a
treatment.

NOW about urine smell...

we know that what we eat and our body chemistry affects the odor of our
urine. (Asparagus ?) Not to mention infections.

I've noticed that my urine has a stronger odor (not bad...just a little
stronger) than before the RRP in March.

I didn't think much of it until I.P. commented that even after
swimming...his trunks would smell.

I wonder if there is a reason for this?

Could the lack of a prostate be something like removing a filter? Shape
change of the bladder have an affect?

Not real important...just wondered why I.P.'s trunks would smell when
being constantly washed by swimming.

Best to all,

Ron B.

Hi Ron:
In the last couple of years I had periods where my urine had a strong
odor and I could never figure out why.  It has not been that way recently,
but I did wonder what was going on at the time.  In my case this started
before the RRP in 2003 and lasted into 2004.  There has been no change in my
diet.  The only medication change was when I went on BP meds in 2004.
   Thank you.

I'd guess we could Google up all sorts of ways to affect urine odor. My only
concession to dietary control of the problem is avoiding asparagus before
going to the beach . . . if I think about it.

Because they're inside a wet suit while in/on the water windsurfing, and
because I'm continually, or at least frequently, leaking when onshore in
just the swim trunks. Can't wear Depends in these scenarios because they
disintegrate in the water. I see . . . er, smell . . . no reason to suspect
my urine smells any different than before. Rinsing the trunks removes the
obvious smell from trunks/wetsuit, and I wash both in the washing machine
frequently.

That makes sense.  I forgot about the wetsuit. I guess in a wetsuit
EVERYTHING smells stronger.

Maybe I notice a change...because at the same time my PCa was
discovered...Type 2 diabetes was ALSO found.

I HAVE changed to a more consistent diet so that might be a factor.

Thanks.

My guess is that it's another case of blaming as much as we can on our
surgery....  hair loss, sense of humor, shoe size, eyesight, etc etc.... of
course I'm always open to anything that can be Googled.

I appreciate JK's thoughts.

Wouldn't it be cool if one of us won the lottery after RRP and 'blamed'
the win on the surgery?

:-)

I promise that if "I" won...(though I don't play...so it would be
tough)...

I'd send everyone a few bucks.  :-)

My best to all,

Usually an antibiotic (like Cipro) is given while any catheters are in
place, and this may account for a stronger odor.  In my case the smell
seems different because the neobladder is constructed of intestinal
material that exudes considerable mucous material, although this is
said to lessen over time.

There are various chemicals available to deal with urine odor (from
any urine deposits that have dried (and that's generally when
objectionable odors occur).  These are enzymes that break the oxidized
urine down into non-odorous compounds that can be readily cleaned up.

Thanks Mr.P.

(Almost as cute a monicker as I.P. Freely)

Maybe you could be "Mr. Pee" :-)

I know that various drugs and foods can cause a change in urine odor.

I was just wondering at the time, (about 5 months after RRP), if folks
noticed a 'stronger' (not so much objectionable) odor to their urine.

With Type 2 diabetes diagnosed at about the same time...my diet includes
more broccoli and cauliflower etc...which could account for a different
odor.

(More than you needed to know, huh?  ;-)

I just found it interesting cuz the pads didn't smell bad, even early on
when heavily soaked...just the stonger urine smell in the bowl.

Thanks so much for offering your help.

(Sorry if it's dinnertime guys.  :-)

All the best,

Ron B.
