Colonoscopy after RRP

Hi all.

At 56, I've been overdue for a colonoscopy for a few years now.

Last November, when I went to my Internist about possible hernias,
Diabetes was diagnosed, and with a blood test showing a PSA of about 7,
there was some advice to "see a urologist" after the diabetes was under
control.

Cutting it short...RRP on March 21st with a good path report (contained,
neg margins and nodes) T1c, Gleason reduced after path from 3+4=7 to
3+3.

Now it's about 3 months and I have an appt. to see a gastro guy
wednesday to talk about the colonoscopy.

I know this doc from an endoscopy he did on me about 10 years ago.

The reason we're TALKING first?

Well, during healing after the RRP...I had the typical rectal pains.
Sitting on cushions, stool softeners, not straining etc.

I figure that it's healed OK by now but I wanted to ask and also convey
my fears. (what else?  :-)

My dad had colon cancer at about 82 and after the RRP...I can say that
I'm not bothered by the prep at ALL.

Not an issue.

It's the RESULTS that scare me.

So I guess what I'm asking is...

Is this 3 or 4 month time enough to heal OK for the scope?

It probably IS, and maybe I should have done it sooner but with the
shock of the RRP and a short vacation coming up...I wanted (needed) a
break.

And...is there anything else I should consider beforehand?

As always, I am very grateful to all of you for your help.

Ron B.

The instructions I have from my surgeon mention a 3-month healing
period for the rectum. After 4 months plus, I would guess that you
should be safe enough.

I had one exactly 3 months after my RP...  Your urologist didn't hardly go
up where this dude is going to go... (lol)  That teeny little scope will
just slide right by that little "tender" spot...  (I can't recall it even
showing up on the "travel log scrap book..."  (lol)

The advice I got from my rad-onc was instruct them no biopsies without
consulting with him first.

You should be asking your urologist and your gastroenterologist about
that.  My  urologist wanted me to wait 6 months, but perhaps he was
being conservative.

My gastroenterologist told me that it typically takes over 10 years for
a polyp to become cancerous.   So you don't really have any spcial
reason to worry about the results of the colonoscopy.
