Well, I was planning to post an "update" today (about finishing RT and
having survived it) but something really excessive has happened: I am
experiencing aftershocks! During the radiation I developed urinary
frequency, urgency, (and burning), but with Flomax and Phenazo it was
manageable although pretty uncomfortable. And, thanks to the suggestions
received here, I used Depends, which turned out not to be needed but gave me
a lot of peace of mind. Now, the RT ended on Thursday and suddenly last
evening the urinary frequency and urgency grew far worse than ever. I have
to urinate, literally, every ten minutes. Needless to say, I have had no
sleep. How long can you survive without sleep? Or going mad?
Also, on Thursday I developed a fever (which dropped pretty quickly) and my
oncologist put me on Cipro thinking it might be a bladder infection. (I
have a hunch this might be a common side effect of RT, don't ask me why.)
We won't know until Monday, when the lab work comes back if it is an
infection.) Is it possible the Cipro has made the urgency so great. Should
I stop it? Needless to say by the time morning came the actual amount of
urine being passed was very small, but the urgency remained..
Any suggestions?.
Stavros (Sleepless in Toronto)

Stavros: I wouldn't stop the Cipro. If you started it on Thursday, I
would continue it until the prescription ends. I doubt that it is going
to cause urinary urgency.

I'd leave things as they are until you talk to the Dr on Monday. I had some
urgency during and after RT and URO prescribed DetrolLA(?) which which made
a big improvement. At this point I would put up with the frequency for
another few days. Good Luck

I have taken Cipro a number of times for UTI's and never had your side
effects. No UTI's since my RRP in 1999.
You will find out tomorrow. The sleep problem is temporary, nerves, if you
can calm yourself, you can go several days without sleep.

Hi Stavros,
I had HR and 3DIMRT back in 2001. I had these same issues when I would get
an infection. This happened to me a few times near the end of my 40
treatments and for a few weeks after. I would not stop the Cepro as it is
probably stopping you from having that wonderful burning that would have
also started up with an infection.
I had scar tissue buildup in the urethra, as one of my main tumors was right
next to it. This also caused VERY slow flow and total blockage a few times.
At one point, with an infection and near total blockage, I was up every 20
minutes or so from Sunday early morning until Thursday late night when I
went in for dilation. You get so tired it actually makes your body ache.
Some of this is from pushing every 20 minutes or so. If you do have scar
tissue building up, you may have to do periodic self-catheterization or go
in for the operation to clear it. Keep tabs on flow and keep your Dr. up to
date if it appears to be continuously getting slower after your Antibiotics
and some time. They will help you with what to do next if you are tending
to get blocked.

You seem to be having a spot of bother after the EBRT.
I was also on Flomax for a few weeks after the 3rd fraction of EBRT,
which I attributed to my not drinking the water for the 1st fraction. I
ceased the Flomax on my own volition a week after the RT and have been
managing OK.
Unfortunately for me I had and still have problems in other areas, viz:
mild cellulitis in the R leg plus fluid collecting in both feet.
My GP (PCP) put me on oral antibiotics which cleared up the cellulitis,
but the fluid is now just starting to recede after nearly 2 mths. We
put this down to lymphedema caused by "overspray" of the pelvic Lymph
glands by the so-called "3DEBRT". I'm also a type 2 Diabetic and have
Vascular problems in this area.
The GP also got me to have an External Pelvic Ultrasound, which showed
up nothing amiss, except my Prostate was measured at 65cc! (from a
similar US Exam prior to treatment in Sep 2004, it was 55cc!). I've had
BPH for 18 yrs and had a TURP done in 1988, so my GP opines I still
have BPH :-((
So on July 11, I'm lining up for HDRB and thinking I'll be coming away
from that, wearing a "Foley" catheter for God knows how long??
Prior to the HDRB. I'm seeing a "venal = commercial" Urologist who
will be present, doing a Cystoscopy, at the template and catheter
needle placement to ensure they don't penetrate my badder plus get the
needles in a reasonable circular pattern.
I'll put money on it he pencils me in for another TURP, the cost of
which wont be covered under my present Clinical Trial :-((
Have a nice day Stavros
