Extreme weariness with Uroxatral

Saw the urologist Wednesday.  Earlier he had taken me off Flomax and put me
on Uroxatral.  After taking 13 pills I stopped taking them.  I was so tired
I couldn't do anything but stay in recliner or the bed.  My wife looked at
the paper that came with the pills.  She came in the bedroom and read where
it said one of the side effects was extreme weariness.  I told her that fit
my condition.  The first day after stopping Eroxatral I started to feel
better.  In three days I was back to normal.

The doctor said I should not have discontinued the medication.  Attributed
my weariness to something else, maybe light flu.  He could tell I was
unconvinced, so he dropped it.  I may start taking one every other day to
see what happens.

He said to come back in November for a 6-months PSA.  Said the oncologist
might want a 3 month PSA but it was his opinion it wouldn't show much.

I'm doing fine, except for frequent trips to the bathroom. There I keep
books and magazines which helps while I'm waiting to go the second time, 3 -
5 minutes later.

Was the change in meds because the Flomax didn't work for you?? It's one of
the few meds I have been taking that works for me without any problems.

George - After a few days on Flomax I stopped in at the doctor to ask why I
was having to urinate every few minutes.  That was when he took me off
Flomax and put me on  Uroxatral.

Did the doctor give you any explanation?

Some possible explanations that come to mind are:

1) The prostate is very swollen, closing down the urethra.  When
you build up a lot of pressure, a bit of urine can be forced through
but as soon as the pressure is relieved a bit, it closes off again.
So you never relieve much of the pressure and you always feel a
need to urinate.

If that's your problem, I would think the bladder would always feel
full.  You'd feel a need to urinate all the time but have trouble doing
it.

2) The bladder took some radiation hits.  It's irritated and burned,
like sunburn, but inside you.  Urine in the bladder irritates it further
and make you want to urinate to get rid of it.

With this one I think you'd feel a need to urinate frequently, and
have little trouble doing it, but it would only give you temporary
relief because as soon as a bit of urine collected in the bladder
you'd feel an urge to get rid of it again.

3) There's nothing too much wrong with you but the drugs are
causing you to have to urinate.

If the problem is number 3, it's real easy to solve.  Just stop
taking the drugs.

If the problem is 1 or 2, those things heal by themselves, but
they take a while.

I'm pretty sure I was suffering from problem number 1 after my
radiation treatment.  I felt a great urge to urinate all the time, but
had trouble doing it.  Flowmax fixed me up.  I tried to get off it
gradually, but it was difficult.  It took about 3 months before I
was healed up enough that I didn't need the Flowmax to make
it possible for me to urinate.

Still have problem #1 and have been taking 2 Flowmax/day for the last year
or so.
Also had problem #2 for a while near the end of RT. Dexrtol LA and another
med (which slips my mind right now) taken for about 2 months helped alot.
Still have alot of "tired days" and some hot flashes 6 months after ending
Lupron. My testosterone has not recovered(was a reading of 9  3mo after
stopping HT). Also have developed thyroid problems ehich add to the fatigue
and have been on Synthroid for about a month with a very slow improvement
being noted.
Is it possible that he is also on Lupron or another HT which would add to
the tiredness?

Without my wife knowing it, because she would fuss, I started back on the
Uroxatral.  Been on it five days now and haven't experienced the weariness I
spoke of earlier.

The urologist said to come back in six months. Was reading the paperwork
from the oncologist and it says that at the end of one month he will want a
scan to determine of the seeds have remained where he placed them.
