Urinary urgency/frequency, advice needed

Let me be just factual about this, but I'm upset.

As some may remember, I'm having RT.  A couple or so weeks ago I ran into
the problem of urinary frequency and urgency, received good advice here (as
always) and then the doc put me on Flomax and Phenazo (phenazopyridine).  We
upped the Flomax to two a day from one.   I have been taking the Phenazo
only twice a day (because of the need to take a lot of water with it),
although prescribed for four times.  This has all worked fine.  That is,
until the weekend.

On Friday I was told that Phase Two of the treatments would begin--a more
concentrated aiming of the radiation beam.  The last ten treatments.  This
meant nothing to me.  I just nodded.  But since then the urinary problem has
returned with vengeance.  All day, all night.  Really bad.  I have increased
the Phenazo to four times, but it's the weekend and I can't reach my doctor.
It is so bad I am really afraid that I won't make it to the hospital
tomorrow.  (I am driven by volunteers and I couldn't possibly use a urinal
in their cars.  Or a taxi.)  I am afraid to increase the Flomax further, and
don't know what to do.

Any advice?  Sorry for being so wordy.

Sorry for the problems Stavros.

I would definately use a urinal if you need it.

They'll understand.

Or...if the trip is short enough...Depends with guards inside?

The phenazo helps with the burning of the urination so though you need
water with it...maybe it's a good trade off?

Best wishes,

Ron B.

Thanks, as always, Ron.  Is that the only benefit of Phenazo--to decrease
the burning sensation?  I can put up with that, unpleasant as it is.  But if
that's all, I may not use the Phenazo so much.  I'm taking too many pills, I
think.  I have Depends here, but I don't know what you mean by guards
inside.  I haven't used depends because they are so hard for me to get on
and off.

I think I'm losing my sense of humour at this point.  But it does seem like
an absurd comedy to me.

I've mulled it around in my mind a tad and have come up with zilch.  I'm
sure you've considered wearing a pad.  So, I assume it's too much for a pad.
I'm afraid, my friend, you're stuck with a urinal.  Sit in the back seat.
And, better yet, have a friend take you and trust your friend is a friend.

Found this on MedlinePlus

Why is this medication prescribed?
Phenazopyridine relieves urinary tract pain, burning, irritation, and
discomfort, as well as urgent and frequent urination caused by urinary
tract infections, surgery, injury, or examination procedures. However,
phenazopyridine is not an antibiotic; it does not cure infections.

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your
doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should this medicine be used?
Phenazopyridine comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is
taken three times a day after meals. Do not chew or crush the tablets;
swallow them whole with a full glass of water. You may stop taking
this drug when pain and discomfort completely disappear. Follow the
directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor
or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take
phenazopyridine exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or
take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

I too have just completed 23 fractions of EBRT and had to go on Flomax
@ 1/day, to ease urinary stricture at the 3rd fraction, possibly due
to not having drunk the water on the 1st fraction and receiving a
slight blast to the base of the bladder. I kept on the Flomax well
after the EBRT,until there were only 6 tabs left in the last packet.
My local GP said he couldn't prescribe them on the PBS ($4.60), but
could Privately, where I would have to pay $66.00. The only place I
could get them for $4.60 was SCGH Pharmacy which is 45 km (30 mins) up
the road. That day, the Freeway was cut by a burst stormwater drain,
so going by alternate route/s would take me 1-1/2 hrs each way. I bit
the bullet and decided to cease taking the Flomax as my urinary system
now seemed to be working more than adequately.
If there was a problem, I still had the 6 remaining tabs to work with.
It turned out OK.

Now, I have a Variable stream, from a slight dribble at night when I'm
drugged to the eyeballs to get to sleep, to an Urgent full flow after
I've drunk a quantity of fluids, hear a flow of any kind or exert
external pressure on the bladder.

Embarrassing incident No. 1.
Filling my car with Gas, rushed into the attendant, slapped down the
Visa Card and bolted for the toilet, unloaded and then returned to
pick up the chit.

Embarrassing incident No. 2.
Holding in 1.5 litres of water for an hour prior to an Ultrsasound
Scan (referred by my GP) to check my pelvic area and kidneys.( I've
had some Cellulitis and Oedema in the lower legs and both feet,
possibly due to the EBRT.)
I was sweating under the icy blast from an airconditioning outlet,
trying to hold in this water in the waiting room. Had to approach the
desk and tell them it was leaking. They said let some out, counting up
to 10, but try to hold some in. I managed this, but whilst on the
table, the pressure of the U/S probe set me off again and it was
leaking again. So 1/2 way thru, I had to run up the hall in full view,
holding onto my trousers and hit the toilet again. Would you believe I
still had some Urine retention??
When I got home, it was Valium time!!

Someone may be falling off their chair by now. I should've recorded it
on video LOL..

STAY TUNED

hi stavros - it sounds like the concentrated beam irritated the urethra
lining.  this can bring about an extreme urgency to go all of a sudden.
anyone who has had a prostate infection might be able to share that
feeling too.

i would definitely let the doctor know what's going on.  if i'm right,
your urgency won't be going away for a little while.

as a temporary solution to this, you could purchase a portable male
urinal.  it is what truck drivers use or people who are in long business
meeting use.  they go over the penis sort of like a condom and have a
leg bag to catch the urine.  this way, you can empty when you go to the
restroom.

hope this helps.

Right now my penis has become so small that I don't think anything can go
over it except maybe a thimble.

Fear not, Stavros.

If the Depends, or Depends with a pad isn't enough...the device that
Curtis mentioned will still work by centering it.

It's held on with straps.

I think it's also called a Texas Catheter?

Best,
