question about post RP orgasms

When I delurked under a separate heading I noted I had a couple of
questions.  This is the first.  A rather delicate subject but if this
disease does one thing it is to remove inhibitions about discussing
bodily functions.  Anyhow.  When my erectile function started to
reappear a few weeks after my RP-i.e. when I started to get an
erection, I began to see if I could bring myself to orgasm.  When that
finally happened, after much trying, I ended spraying urine all over
the place.  I thought that this was just a one off, but it happened
again the second time-an inadvertent golden shower. I have not tried
again since the results were so, how should I put it, messy.   I have
not bothered my urologist with this, since I was taking so much of his
time up with other issues and I don't seem him again for 4 weeks.

Is this normal?  Does it stop?  Is there a way to prevent it?

I couldn't find any info on this in the literature or on the need.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Because there's no cutoff valve, that will happen unless you completely
drain the bladder first, that's all.

Yep, completely drain yourself just before..  AND, possibly let your mindset
get more comfortable with the fact that urine isn't quite as "messy" as we
used to think it was...  What used to be "yuck" just might have become "Hey,
whatta guy!"  (pounding on one's chest... lol)   Whatever works...  Besides,
it's the only thing that's going to be coming out of old Charley ever again
- we might want to learn to enjoy it.

(I'm real envious over your erections so soon after RP, though...  I'd kill
for a natural hardon and it's been over 6 months for me...  However, I
understand that we all recover at different times.)

10/04: PSA = 10.4, T1C, Gleason 7 (“in a few samples”)
11/04: RP “looks like we got it” - sparing one and a half bundles of nerves
05/05: PSA = less than 0.1
05/24/05: Good bladder control - no erections (yet) - soreness “inside”
belly finally subsided for the most part - but, still sore to the touch
along the incision

Do yer sex thing, whether solo or duet, sitting up. Adds a lot of size and
firmness to the task.
And I find that draining my bladder just lessens, but by no way stops, the
urine squirts.

It is quite normal.  It does help if you empty your bladder first.
Also, it does improve with time for most men, I believe.  It certainly
did in my case.

This issue is discussed in several places, including, if I remember
correctly, Walsh's book.  Walsh and other urologists, including mine,
point out that unless you have a bladder infection, fresh  urine is
sterile.  They used to use it on the battlefield to cleanse wounds.  So
aside from any mental associations it, there is no particular reason to
be concerned about it during sex.  Also, although in a man with a
prostate, during and erection the bladder is more or less shut off from
the pathway,  nothing is foolproof.   It would be amazing if during a
long history of sexual relations, some urine weren't mixed with your semen.

If I were you, I would definitely talk to my urologist about it.   It
certainly shouldn't be a reason for avoiding sex.

Nope.

Nope. You just block it with a towel.

It's in the books.

Mega dittos.

Yep, it can stop.

Yep.  Empty your bladder and firm and
tighten the sphincter muscles.  One can
have an orgasm and still keep those
muscles tightened down on the urethra
so that any urine in the bladder doesn't
come out.  Not everyone who has had
treatment for prostate cancer ejaculates
or loses urine when they orgasm.  I
have had a couple of orgasms and I
wouldn't say my bladder was completly
empty and I didn't spray or leak.  I was
a little nervous about the first one because
I expected to leak or spray and didn't.

I haven't reseached the topic that deeply, but I wouldn't WANT to stifle an
orgasm any more than I would a sneeze, a belch, or a good backwoods fart on
a hunting trip. I want every muscle I can train, from my knees to my abs, to
get involved in every convulsion, and I do NOT want to reduce an orgasm to a
technical procedure. Squirting whatever's available through the center of
the system adds to both partners' sensation, up to the point that it gets
too messy.  It's NOT like urinating; it's like an orgasm that produces
ounces, rather than ccs, of semen. I'm gonna drain my bladder thoroughly
ahead of time, and from that point on I'm takin' the E ride. Hoo, hah!

I.P. I hear you.  And I can see why what I wrote could be
understood to suggest that I was talking about somehow
contracting your urinary sphincters during an orgasm -
and that dog just won't hunt!  No man is going to be able
to do that.  But, what I'm saying is that with time the
sphincter muscles will retain their tautness without conscious
control even during orgasm.  There does seem to be at
least an anecdotal correlation between continence and
retaining urine during orgasm.  I'm only suggesting that
the stronger those muscles, the better their tone, the
better you handle ordinary continence then the better the
chances that you will not squirt or leak during an orgasm.
Of course I could be all wet..... so to speak ;-)

Chris M,
Same for me. Pee first. It went away by about 3 months.

My RRP was 12/1/04, with nerves spared on one side.  Had the same problem
for some time.  Then, magically, I noticed it had virtually stopped, with
only an occasional surprise.  Shortly after this, my incontinence improved
dramatically to only using 1 pad in 24 hours.  That was about 4.5 months
post-op.

Still no erections, even with ED meds.
Steve Kramer - 24 May 2005 22:04 GMT
Chris,

It is normal.  I think it disappears in most cases.  I know it did in mine.
Basically, my ejaculation of urine subsided in proportion to my
incontinence.

We're talking about urinating during sex, not normal incontinence. I'm
almost 3 years post RP. I am totally dry. I get erections and have sex, but
although I still cannot get a visually caused erection, I will suddenly pee
when I see or think about something sexy. I need to empty my bladder right
before sex, but will need to do it again during just to make sure. It's a
real annoyance, but it eventually works and stays dry until we are done. I
don't think this will ever improve, but who knows?

Hi Chris,

Be glad you're getting erections and don't worry about spraying.  Just be
sure you empty your bladder fully before you go for the orgasm and
everything should be o.k.  After all, you can't spray much if there isn't
anything in there to spray.

Never ever thought I would suggest this to anyone in this newsgroup but,
well ... I suppose you COULD try using a condom.
