Does anyone have info on efficacy of radioactive seed implantation in the
prostate? Myself I had the prostate removed, but some acquaintances went
for radioacrive seeds. As far as I know they're still alive. I'm really
asking for my son who has an increased probability of incurring the disease
because it's in the family. Dario

Gotta read the books and authoritatve websites, Dave. You need DATA, not
just individual experiences. Bookstore, online, etc. Seeds are just one of
ANY options. Fortunately, PC grows slowly enough that we can put off the
reading -- STUDY, actually -- untilwe have PC, as confirmed my biopsy. As
long, that it, as he is getting his PSA and DRE exams at advised intervals.
If he's not, and is over 40, NOW is the time to start reading.

Seeds work just as well one low grade (Gleason 6, 3+3) PC. The trick is to
catch the cancer early enough to be able to use this option. Many doctors
will only consider seeding on Gleason 6, 3+3 patients.
Go to http://www.cooleyville.com/ for more information on brachytherapy.
Also RCOG's site http://www.rcog.com/home.htm
From Duke University Radiation Oncology Dept: (Since IP always wants my
sources! LOL)
Early results from prostate implants reveal for appropriate early stage
patients rates of control as good as those reported for radical
prostatectomy. For more advanced stages of disease the combination of
external beam and prostate implant yields improved results in terms of
disease control over either external beam radiation alone or radical
prostatectomy.
