Caught early, cervical cancer is very curable. Financial Assistance here www.state.ma.us/dma/masshealthinfo/applmemb_IDX.htm You've already collected approx $900. Guess Who (Alex) works in a hospital in Boston, Mass and knows all the ins/outs of cancer care coverage. You can find her on alt.support.cancer.breast Put her name in the subject line and ask her if you should buy Blue Cross with the money or what exact steps to take first. Don't point her to your website; you'll get flamed, by many there, for asking for money. Explain the situation (expected hospital stay, what hospital won't cover your mother's care etc) in your post. Start with.. I'm sorry, I know this is off-topic because it's cervical cancer, but I heard that you can help me with insurance/hospital matters for my mother's cancer. J
Steve Kramer - 15 May 2005 12:21 GMT Gunny,
I am sorry to hear about your mother. Your children will be fine. They have ADD when it comes to things like this. Focus on your mother.
What I would be most concerned about is whether your children grow up with the same moral backbone, or lack thereof, as their father.

David,
My experience is that children take their cues from their parents on these kinds of things. If you and your wife stay calm and positive, the children will be reassured. If you show a lot of anxiety, the children may also be anxious.
Assuming your children are old enough to understand the basics of these things, I would tell them that Grandma has gotten sick and is going to have an operation to cure the problem. She's got a good doctor and we think she's going to be okay. She's a little nervous and upset about going to the doctor (I bet the kids will understand that), but we are going to be very nice to her and make her feel better.
Good luck to you and to your mother.'

Steve Kramer - 17 May 2005 23:32 GMT Yeah, that's why I assaulted his moral fiber. What a jerk. Aint no way he's a Marine. Marines don't make it out of boot camp without moral fiber.

Stephen Jordan - 15 May 2005 19:47 GMT > Is it evil of me to observe that I have become increasingly cynical > over the past decade+ on corresponding with strangers on USENET and > observing the rise of unregulated and unsubstantiated personal web > sites? No, it's prudent.
But moving a little further OT, I'd have to say that I would not advocate regulation of websites. By whom? Based upon what criteria? Looks like censorship to me, and I think it's pretty well established that that doesn't work.
OTOH, if the website is a scam and criminal activity can be proven and prosecuted, that's not censorship, it's enforcement of the statutes prohibiting what's called "theft by fraud and device."
After getting the gah-zings slipped to me a couple of times, I made the deliberate decision to become a squinty-eyed suspicious and, yes, cynical old grouch. So far, so good. Especially the "old" part.

J - 15 May 2005 21:00 GMT > Is it evil of me to observe that I have become increasingly cynical > over the past decade+ on corresponding with strangers on USENET I googled him. (in the archives) He's since (after my reply here) posted to various places but NOT the 2 newsgroups where he would get flamed for asking for money. She owes for past medical debts. (or so he claims on one post) J
Alan Meyer - 15 May 2005 22:27 GMT > Is it evil of me to observe that I have become increasingly cynical > over the past decade+ on corresponding with strangers on USENET and > observing the rise of unregulated and unsubstantiated personal web > sites? No it isn't evil. It's wise.
I feel like an idiot for responding to the guy's request as if what he wanted was help explaining things to his children.
His website is remarkably sophisticated - with Paypal and credit card logos, a thermometer progress bar, photos of little children, cervical cancer graphics, and so on. Either the guy is a serious web designer, or he's gotten help from one. One can't help but wonder if someone would have paid him the $9,500 he says he needs to set up a website, so he could have earned the money instead of spending all that effort to solicit contributions.
I know there are serious cases out there, but I won't give money to them. There's no way to separate the real cases from the crooks. And there are plenty of known good charities to give to who help people in just as desparate need.

David J. Gaudreau - 16 May 2005 05:01 GMT Yes, it is true that WE are looking for money. Yes, I have a 6 year old daughter named Tiffany. Yes, I designed the website, soley and completely using Dreamweaver, Adobe CS and photographs from our family photo albums. Yes, that is myself with my mother on the front page. I do not know how I can prove any of this to anyone, if you think of something, let me know.

Steve Kramer - 17 May 2005 23:39 GMT As you may have surmised, I doubt your integrity.
However, with the small possibility that you are legitimately asking for us to help you financially with your mother's cancer, exercise a brain cell or two and think about whom you've solicited.... a bunch of guys who have cancer and are trying to pay for their own treatments.
You can send your donation in care of my name to 824 Broadway FL4, Cincinnati, OH 45202.
