To all the mom's and children of moms out there:

My mom was a martyr and saint. She cooked, cleaned, baked, ran the house,
put up with my crazy dad, and her 3 wild boys. All this in a 2 room
apartment in Coney Island. She and my dad slept on a pull out sofa bed in
the living room while us 3 boys shared one small room. Somehow we all
survived with one bathroom. There were no extras such as toys clothes or
vacations. I lived on ripped and broken hand-me-downs from my older
brothers. She always found a little change to give me for a Saturday movie,
or a day at the amusements. Never did she make any of us wash dishes or
clothes for our money. She would sit by herself quietly eating what we
leftover, after she cooked and served us ungrateful bastards every night. To
anyone she remotely knew, went a handknit sweater that would take her weeks
to make for their new baby. When she baked, the entire block would be at the
door for samples, all were cheerfully fed. Everyone came before she did.
With all this I never felt poor or needy. How did she do it?
Sadly she never got to meet and spoil all her grandchildren. She died at
65 years old, due to neglecting her health for many years. In later years
she worked a bit in the family shop to help make ends meet. She had a very
short lived retirement in Florida, and despite a terrible inner ear thing
that left her dizzy and nauseous a lot of the time, she still managed to
enjoy knitting and laying in the sun. When the family would come for a visit
she was in her glory cooking and baking 24/7 so everyone got the specialty
they wanted. She still wouldn't join us at the table until everything was
done, and all were satisfied. She was so proud to show us all off to her new
retired neighbors. Once I apologized for looking at a cute woman walking
down the street despite my being married. "When a man stops looking, he's
dead", was her comforting response to me. Another time I was concerned that
hefting her grandchild would be too much for her. "A mother always has the
strength for her children". "Even me", I asked. "If I had to pick you up and
carry you, even you", she told me confidently.
Happy mothers day mom, I still love and miss you more than ever!

I meant to say this yesterday, JK......"what a lovely tribute to your mom".
She did a good job of raising you if you can express your feelings like
this.

Cheers....Heather
