Catheter Advice Needed

Got home Saturday after robotic.  Today (Monday) every time I sit on the
toilet for a bowel movement or with gas I end up peeing around my catheter
and out my penis.  It is yellow and not bloody at all.  Plenty of urine is
going into the Foley bag, but is it typical for some urine to bypass the
catheter?

Also, my stomach is harder today than yesterday.  Some spots are quite firm,
almost hard to the touch.  Is that typical?  I am actually in a little more
pain today than yesterday although I did walk some this morning.  More than
yesterday.

The problem with the catheter is common.  I had it too.  I don't know about
the hardness in the abdomen.  Best to check with your doc.

Thanks Claude.  I did a google search and learned that
this leakge around the catheter isn't uncommon and so
it's reassuring to hear from you about it as well.  I was
a little surprised the first time it happened.  My doc not
to be surprised if I has a little blood around the catheter
now and then, but I wasn't prepared for a lot of urine.

The stomach I will wait on and see how it is in the morning.  My doc is
supposed to call me in the morning about my pathology report and I can ask
him how much firmness is to be expected.

Thanks for your kind help!

Unfortunately the leakage is not uncommon.  I had it with one catheter that
was a small 12 size.  The larger ones did not leak.  My last one, a 20, I
could not get it to leak by even by pushing hard like I was trying to pee.
Keep tabs on the stomach.  Especially if you start seeing color in the hard
areas.  Let your Dr. know right away if you do.  I don't know if this is
common or not.

That is absolutely normal, may I suggest
that you take a mild natural laxative to soften the stool.

Reuben,

Thanks for the suggestion. I am already taking a mild
laxative and my stool is quite loose, actually fairly
watery. Are you saying that some hard or firm places
in the abdomen are normal after a robotic prostactectomy?

Hi Fred,

I had a RPP - not a robotic one and thus would not dare to advise.
I was referring to the leakage of urine between the penis and the
cath.

I had RLRP last year (3/26/04), and can say I had no leakage problem, but
that might be because they used a cotton-pickin' sewer pipe for the
catheter!!!!
As goes the "firmness" in areas of the abdomen, I can SUGGEST (and this is
ONLY a suggestion) that the incisions are sutured inside, while the outsides
of the incisions are "glued and/or butterflied.  I, too, had a few areas
that felt like little knots, but the Dr. assured me they would disolve.
Certainly, however, consult your physician, but this might well be what
you're experiencing.

ditto what the other said about the leakage.  I was shocked when I sat on
the throne and shot out a stream that landed about two foot away.  I had no
idea that was possible with the catheter.  After that I held a wad of toilet
paper around the catheter while sitting.  That required frequent changes but
did the job.

They had me taking one tablespoon of mineral oil in the morning and Milk of
Magnesia at night for a month or so after the surgery to keep things moving.
You may want to consider that if things are getting blocked up.  As the
others advised, be sure to talk to your doctor about this.

Good luck.  How long will you have the catheter?  I had to wear that thing
for three full weeks!

Thanks for the info!  My doc said to expect a little leakage and that it may
be bloody and not to be surprised by it.  But, I shot a foot or two as well!
Kind of surprised.  Now I am doing what you did.  I just stuff some toilet
paper around the catheter.

The doc will call with the pathology report today and I will ask him.
I'm taking Sennakot with a stool softener and have regular very
loose bowel movements and no gas.  So it's not a bowel thing.
And it isn't all over my abdomen, but only in a couple of places -
one primarily underneath the largest laparoscopy incision.

I had surgery last Thursday and have it out this Friday.  So eight days.

Hi OCL.

I would ask your doc when you talk to him today but I agree with a lot
of the guys...since it's so soon after surgery...it sounds like it's
probably normal post surgery stuff.

It's been only 5 days.

I hope you continue to feel better,

Ron B.

Perfectly normal, Fred.  This is possibly the most often asked question
subsequent to surgery.  I wonder why docs don't tell us it's going to
happen.

I had a Robotic RP. I  too had some blood and some urine leak out
around the catheter. It was no problem. If you are having increasing
pain, tell your doctor, then let him worry about it. Good luck.

While not a subject of robotic surgery (I had a traditional scalpel
wielder), I did have a bit of leakage from around the catheter. According to
my urologist this was normal.

What I really wanted to mention was your comment about having some firm
spots. In addition to the radical I also had a small hernia repaired
directly above and to the side of my belly-button. When I got home my entire
abdomen was a sea of purples, blues, yellows, and reds, with a series of
what we Canadians would class as small hockey pucks where all the
multi-colours were. On the day I got home and while catching up on my news
groups a sneeze took me by surprise with no pillow or cushion available. As
it turns out I popped a stitch that was part of the hernia repair. About an
hour later I happened to glance down and both my hands and my shirt were
coated in blood. Took a few minutes to clean up the mess and my wife felt
that she could see where a stitch had popped.

We repeated this process of bleed, panic, and clean up for about a week
before I finally went to see the urologist. In addition to his attempt at
humour, "You do realize that you look like you went 12 rounds with Mike
Tyson on one of his good days." he stated that the 'hockey pucks' were blood
clots that normally would dissolve over the course of time. In my case they
were taking the easy way out and were exiting through the incision. This
went on until the last one left about 2 weeks ago (about 11 or 12 weeks
post-op). Applying a heating pad did help in the clots dissolving without
making a mess.

Charlie,

Thanks for this bit of personal history.  Doc hasn't called yet and may not
until tomorrow.  I'm not suffering and am not concerned.  I have watched my
temperature and am watching to see if the areas change color or get hot or
much harder or more painful.  Then I'd call him.  Otherwise I think I can
wait until tomorrow.

I had RRP 3 Weeks ago at Detroit.  I had Massive amounts of bruising on the
right side with the right slit of Entry from an instrument.  The Bruising
went all the way down my right side to above my right knee on the rt.
outside.  I also had a large (4 " X 7 Inch hard section0  When I called
the physician he called it an Hematoma, and said it would dissappear.
Both the Bruising and the Hematoma are almost gone.  Another person
replying to this situation stated the Bruising might have been from the
positioning of the angle they had on the Table I was on.  One said they
tilt the body to a 45 Degree angel  ??  not sure if anyone else has has
this.
Never-the-less after 3 weeks post surgery  Most of bruising  is gone
and Guess what.  I just checked the hematoma and its almost gone too..  So
is the itching.
