I've been running for just a couple of months (to trim off some excess
weight) and have just completed my first ever fun run, 8 km. I had 3
goals: 1 - to finish, 2 - to run all the way and 3 - to do it in under
an hour. I managed all three with a time of 55 mins 33 sec, woohoo!
I have always been a walker, every day for around an hour so the step up
into running was not too hard. I started by walking up a fairly long
hill to increase my aerobic fitness and then went back to the flat and
running a while then walking when I got puffed until I could run a
complete route that I had decided on for the day.
I now run about 6 km and 3 km on alternate days and my next goal is a
10.5 (qtr marathon) in August.
btw, I still leak like crazy on a run but that's as bad as it gets and
most other times just have a light pad for security. Improving all the
time too.

Dave:
Do you monitor yourself when you run? I have a friend at work that is
into serious exercise and she wears a small device that monitors her heart
rate and pulse rate as she runs. If you are new to running in your 50's it
may be prudent to include something like that in your routine to make sure
you are not overdoing it.
I envy you your discipline in tackling this and sticking with it. I
have not yet quite made it off the couch (well, that is not really true, you
see I am married and I seldom get to sit on the couch for very long).
Take care.

Yes I use a heart rate monitor, it's a great way to measure improvement
in fitness and of course, as you mention to make sure I don't overdo it.
As I said to another NG I want to condition and strengthen my heart,
not explode it :-)

Dave,
I was a runner long before I joined this club. I took me about three
months to be dry while running. After that, I was always dry no matter
what. I think being fit helps get over the surgery.

Dave,
I'm two and a half years post and I run just about every day. It's one
of my joys of living. You will get better in time. Keep it up.

Hi Dave,
I run 5k....Actually I do 4 miles whenever I am not at work. Sat. and
Sun. and anyday, I do not work.....I am a General Contractor and do physical
labor during the week.
We just did our Boonville Classic 5 K run and I did it in 28.40.
I took a minute off of last years time....
Good running shoes and arch supports if needed are great for me.
I am working on my arm motion and stride....
My son told me I need to do those things.
I try.....We do have some groups here that meet and walk and run. I have
been a solitary runner but think I may try to meet with the group.
Good wishes..John Loomis
