LIVING WILL DECLARATION

I, ____________________________, being of sound mind and body, do not wish
to be kept alive indefinitely by artificial means.

Under no circumstances should my fate be put in the hands of peckerwood
politicians who couldn't pass ninth-grade biology if their lives depended on
it.

If a reasonable amount of time passes and I fail to sit up and ask for a
cold beer, it should be presumed that I won't ever get better.  When such a
determination is reached, I hereby instruct my spouse, children and
attending physicians to pull the plug, reel in the tubes and call it a day.

Under no circumstances shall the members of the Legislature enact a special
law to keep me on life-support machinery.  It is my wish that these
boneheads mind their own damn business, and pay attention instead to the
health, education and future of the millions of Americans who aren't in a
permanent coma.

Under no circumstances shall any politicians butt into this case.  I don't
care how many fundamentalist votes they're trying to scrounge for their run
for the presidency in 2008, it is my wish that they play politics with
someone else's life and leave me alone to die in peace.

I couldn't care less if a hundred religious zealots send e-mails to
legislators in which they pretend to care about me. I don't know these
people, and I certainly haven't authorized them to preach and crusade on my
behalf. They should mind their own business too.

If any of my family, physicians or a politician goes against my wishes and
turns my case into a political cause, I hereby promise to come back from the
grave and make his or her existence a living hell.

I suspect that, had she signed even this document, her wishes, had they been
her wishes, would have been adhered to.

Steve,
It was meant to be tongue in cheek, however, you're probably on target.

I understood that.  Laughed too.  But, it sure brings the point home.

Not from I've been hearing. It seems (i.e., I've not yet verified) that many
physicians and/or hospitals are ignoring living wills, choosing instead to
protect themselves from law suits and/or put their Hippocratic oath ahead of
their patients' choices by taking extreme measures to prolong life. Assuming
I near that point with any advance notice, I plan to have my
hospital and my physician staff SIGN the living will I, my wife, and a
lawyer draw up. I will back that up by ensuring that I have the means at
hand
of avoiding being held prisoner in a defunct body as Terri Schiavo was. I'm
not leaving a decision, or ANY legal doubt, in the hands of any bureaucracy,
politician, do-gooder, activist, or religious fanatic. Only my wife will
have the authority to override my living will.

Because he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly, widower
father died, Charles decided he needed a woman to enjoy it with.

Going to a singles' bar, he spotted a woman whose beauty took his breath
away.

"I'm just an ordinary man," he said, walking up to her, "but in just a
week or two, my father will die and I'll inherit 20 million dollars and
would like to have someone to share it with."

The woman went home with Charles, and the next day she became his
stepmother.

knowledge is power - growing old is mandatory - growing wise is optional
"Many more men die with prostate cancer than of it. Growing old is
invariably fatal. Prostate cancer is only sometimes so."
