The National Cancer Institute predicts that there will be an end to cancer deaths by 2015.....
"By 2015, we can eliminate cancer suffering and death."
"This is something you've never heard before," Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach said at the opening forum of the 96th annual meeting of the American Association of Cancer Research, a gathering of more than 16,000 of the world's leading cancer specialists and researchers.
I. P. Freely - 17 Apr 2005 23:17 GMT So, if we can all just hang on for another decade, we're cured? HALLELUJA! ;-)

> The National Cancer Institute predicts that there will be an end to cancer > deaths by 2015..... > > "By 2015, we can eliminate cancer suffering and death." Steve Kramer - 17 Apr 2005 23:28 GMT It sure makes me feel good about my doctor's guarantee to keep me alive another 10 years.
And, to add to the exuberance, think about the possibility that prostate cancer might be the first one cured. If they go by the numbers, PCa will be first.

I note that Dr. von Eschenbach, director of the NCI, is a urologist. So he's certainly well aware of PCa.

Those Aussies know what they're doing with PCa.
In the Australian trial, 3 out of 4 men with advanced, metastatic, hormone refractory disease have had no disease progression by any measure for 18 months since starting phenoxodiol - a drug developed in Australia.
Bigger trials are now underway in the U.S.
The Aussies may have the smarts, but we Americans have it all over them in diseased prostates.

When I found this ng in Oct, 2004, I was very green and thirsted for info, and was desperate for a treatment venue, having sacked my original Uro and Rad oncologist for perceived incompetence. By yelling out "HELP" from someone in the group, I was steered into the best deal at the best local Clinical Trial for my treatment regime, (ADT and RAD). So I have the group to thank for that. Since then, I've almost made a career on collecting and analysing info from various kosher PCa websites and have the group to thank for that as well. Now I seem to be a "Voice" in the group, even though I'm fairly, loud, overbearing, rude and arrogant at times *sic*. (I have all you Yanks to beat up and there's only one of me actively posting lol.)
Progress: Since starting @ end Oct, 2004, I'm almost at the end of my 23 fraction EBRT phase and soon be having HDRB as a 70th birthday present, after a pre-cystoscopy by a Uro, who will be on the HDRB team. Got my 3rd shot of 3 mthly Lucrin (similar to Lupron), yesterday, with 3 more to go. Ongoing PSA monitoring and a few DRE's to go. My monitoring schedule extends to 2013, (hopefully, if I'm still around).

Seems to me of the five most arrogant guys on this NG in the last 3 years were fairly well split among five nations (unless you count Canada Bob for the UK). I'd sure hate to think you feel you gotta take on the whole US by yourself. We're expecting 230,000 more members in 2005 alone.

So they'll be in line for "the > cure". Of course, for my son, my brother in law, and cousin (though it is my fervent hope they escaped cancer's clutches), I hope for a cure. But, can you imagine what would happen if suddenly, in 2015, no one died of it?
Would cigarettes be permitted again?
Could we have our asbestos brake linings back?
Would the government switch to Twinkies for 'sin' taxation?
Would we fill the Outback?

I somehow missed hearing about this drug, which was granted FDA fast track status in January - thank's for bringing it up, Alan. It has had more testing in the U.S. for cancers other than PCa and has shown promise pretty much acrosss the board. I could not find any current or forming PCa trials but a Phase III should be on the way I would think.
Re no more deaths after 2015: I hope I'm not the last one!

I believe there is one trial for which PCa patients qualify, see:
http://cancer.gov/search/ViewClinicalTrials.aspx?cdrid=68802&version=HealthProfe ssional&protocolsearchid=1565975
One of the purposes of the trial is:
"Determine the maximum tolerated dose of phenoxodiol in patients with refractory solid tumors."
I believe hormone refactory PCa qualifies as a "refractory solid tumor".
If I have a recurrence of the cancer, my first line of defense will be ADT. After that, I'm hoping that phenoxodiol or a similar drug will prove successful and be available in time to save me - or at least get me through to a heart attack or whatever eventual fate is in store for me if the cancer doesn't do me in.

Heather - 18 Apr 2005 01:26 GMT I am willing to bet a buck or two that you didn't bother to read the article (G)!! Oops.....I see Stavros has put the whole article out there......so I guess you did. Kidding retracted!!
I thought it was a major statement and as Steve commented, I also think prostate cancer will be sooner. There have been some really major breakthroughs in the past two years, according to our oncologist at Sunnybrook's Cancer Centre.
Anyway....I thought some *good news* was due......so hang in there for 10 years, OK guys?? ;-)
Cheers.....Heather
