Might not hurt to ask about machine calibration if getting RAD. I'm sure
they will say everything is A-OK, but might save some grief later.
Anticipated side effects can be bad enough - I know from experience.

George...
This is very sad...77 men were affected, 12 died and the center was only
fined $1000?...their checks and balance system failed...

Makes you wonder whether the technicians giving the RAD treatments really
know much about the machines they operate. I had 42 IMRT and 2 different
times the machine stopped in the middle of a treatment and had to be
"reset". Did I get an improper dose at the moment the machine
malfunctioned?? They said not, but..... do they really know. The machine I
used was in use constantly from 6AM until after 5PM 5 days a week. I often
wonder if, how and when sufficient maintenance and calibration was performed

I asked the same question about a "stop and start" and was told that the
dose never changes as they re-start the program...

I get the impression that most of the technicians who perform
medical services care about the patients but, unfortunately, there
are some for whom it's just a job, not a vocation.

Also, even for the ones who really care, it's hard to be on your
toes 8 hours a day, every day, for your entire working life.  But
how do you explain that to a man whose dying of radiation
burns, or to the woman who has been married to him for 40 years?

I work as a computer programmer.  If I counted all the errors
I've made in my work over the course of 30 years of programming,
it would scare anybody.  Thankfully, no lives depend on my getting
everything right!

Hello Alan and others,
Nobody said anyone died of the extra radiation.
It simply says that "77 patients were affected. Twelve have since died"
The 12 (or any of them), could have been receiving palliative radiation for end stage
cancer.
In other words, they could have died from the cancer, not the radiation.

This has more detail - mostly or all brain radiation - seems to imply
occurred a year ago.
