I would suggest not worrying about it if it doesn't happen.  If you
hadn't had your prostate removed, you would actually be mmore likely to
experience urinary problems as you aged.

I think that is a mispercesption based on the fact that men with such
problems are likely to come to fora like this one to ask questions.  The
great bulk of men who have had RPs experience at worst minor problems
like occasional stress incontinence.

I had a RP 9 years ago and did have some urinary blockage about a week
after the cath was removed.  There wasn't much the docs could do
because the surgery still hadn't really healed.

I treated it with an ice bag.  Took a fanny pack and pack it with
leak-proof ice bags and it helped.  My discomfort lasted about three
days.  About a month later, the docs went in and removed scar tissue
in the urethera.  Had to wear another cath for about a week - removed
it myself.  No after effects now.  Peein' straight and sex is great.

You also need to distinguish between incontinence (free pee) and blockage
(no pee), simplistically speaking. The former is a nuisance, the latter is
problematic at best, ER-time if total.

I have not seen this question answered.
Do I have to worry for life if urinary blockage due to scarring will
occur after surgery or is there a time after which it will not occur ?
I see many men with urinary problems due to surgery.

hi - i believe i can answer that question having gone through this
ordeal.

after having the dilatation of restriction and failed and then ended
with the surgery where they go up to the bladder neck area and do the
cut downs.  i was told by the surgeon that this was permanent.  that i
would have no problems for the rest of my life due to restrictions.

what i've noticed is that after everything is healed, if you didn't have
problems, chances are you won't have problems later in life because what
causes problems has been removed - that is - the prostate.

I think I am one of the very few who has had blockage after RRP.....I had
blockage start after 2 weeks of removing my cath after surgery.....to make
the long story short, I had a total of 5 (yes Five) procedures to eliminate
"neck bladder stricture"...evey time I had the blockage develop slowly and
within a week, it got to the point where I had to have the procedure.....the
last one (number 5) was about 4 years ago and I have problem free since....

Every time I had to have the procedure, I asked the Doctor to please be very
careful since I did not want the incontinence problem in exchange !

Maybe that's why the five times.....

Every time I had the syrgery, I had to keep the cath in afterwards for 7
days.....

  My take on this is that blockage is a rare issue with surgery. I think
that great stream flow is the more common result.
