I will have salvage 3D Conformal RT in about two weeks time - which
will finish around end of April (RP six years ago) .
I have been invited recently by friends for some holidays in the
beginning of June (1 week to ten days, traveling by car, some trekking
- around 10 miles / day, most of the days).
I am concerned that if I accept I could be forced to cancel close to
departure due to possible side effects and this would not be nice on
the people involved in the organization of the trip.
So, I guess that my doubt is how likely is it that intensity of
possible side effects one month after RT would stop me from joining
the group. I realize that I will be playing the odds here but what are
the likely odds? Comments from someone that already had salvage RT
would be welcome.
I have been mostly a lurker in this newsgroup since 2002 but I do not
recollect much posting on this particular point of side effects from
salvage RT.
Many thanks for your inputs.

Just, are you having some HT before and along w/ the RT? What was your
surgical pathology? I'm considering salvage RT too so I am curious.

Hi Bill!
From my pathology report in March 1999:
pTMN: pT2b NO Mx
AUA: B2
Gleason: 7 (3+4)
Location: PZ
Prostate + seminal vesicles: 58 g., 55x33x29 mm
Estimated cancer volume: 0.9 cc
Extra-capsular extension: negative
Lymph node involvement: negative
Seminal vesicle involvement: negative
Perineural invasion: negative
Surgical margins: negative
Vascular invasion: present
My PSA is now 0.22 and has been slowlly but steadilly increasing for
the last 2 1/2 years.
Both my urologist and radiation oncologist advised against HT in my
specific circunstances - so I will not be having it.

Just,
I walked a couple of miles a day, drank gallons of water, and slept an extra
hour each night during salvage radiation. I would have had no problem
driving for a long trip or doing some teckking. I didn't even miss any work
other than about 20 minutes a day for 35 days.

Just,
I had radiation of the regular, not salvage, variety. My side effects
included some aggravation of the hemmorhoids, and difficulty
urinating. Neither one incapacitated me in any way. I took a big
trip, a cruise, about a month after the end. I had no difficulty walking
or doing any normal activities.
The difficulty urinating required me to take Flowmax, which I took
with me on the cruise. I had to urinate more often than usual and
got up frequently during the night. But as long as I took my pills
every day I had no other problems.
If you have side effects, I think there's a good chance that you'll
be able to figure them out and get them under control within the
first week after the end of treatment. If you'll be doing a lot of
walking, or even if you won't, it's a good idea to stay in shape
during the treatment by keeping up some exercise without
overdoing it.
My recommendation is, accept the invitation and plan on having
a good time.
Alan
