Visited the incontinence uro today at Northwestern Hospital . . . he
said the sphincter must have been damaged during surgery (7-21-03). I
am peeved because we're now talking about medical malpractice, done by
another uro surgeon at NH, which is supposed to be a "top uro center".
So much for that idea! I had already been suspicious of the surgeon-uro
by things he said, and the way he acted, in the half a dozen visits
since the RRP (for example, when I told him I had blood in my stool
while still in the hospital after the surgery, he (dishonestly, I
think) refused to disclose that it probably (or could have) happened as
a result of pulling the enlarged prostate off the rectal wall - instead
he said to get a colonoscopy!). I almost had it licked (I thought) last
summer, was only needing one, and at most two pads a day, and since a
regression started in September (from doing Kegels, mind you) it has
gotten steadily worse. I now have little control upright, and
substantially more leaking otherwise than at any time during the past
16 or 17 mos. I explained to the doc today that I can clamp down much
easier than then, but he said that doesn't matter, that it's another
mechanism that controls the constant, long term, overall control that
we rely on most for continence. I'm having an AMS sphincter installed
3-15. I leak too much for a sling (>150 grams/day) and NH's custom
built sling hasn't been tested enough for me (enuf risk taking!) even
tho it supposedly has as good a results as the AMS. I am really pissed
at the surgeon-uro doctor, so unless I find out there is a reasonable
possibility he didn't botch the RRP, I am going after him. It's been a
difficult 19 mos. post RRP, except for a brief 3 month respite last
summer, and since only about 30% of any corrective device yields "no
pads" in the future, the future isn't bright even with a device
installed.

I am 18 month post RRP and still incontinent, 1-3 pads per day. I have
experienced a regression in the incontinence too. There was a point about a
year ago when I was down to one pad per day and had thoughts of forgetting
about Depends Guards. It was not to be though. In the last few months it
got worse, no Kegels in my case though, and I got to the point where I was
using 3 pads per day. Weekends were always worse because of more activity.
At work I sit at a desk in front of a computer all day, so usually that
results in less leaking.
My uro seemed genuinely concerned and a bit puzzled by my continued
incontinence. He offered to do a cysto to check it out, but he said there
were risks with that procedure and there was no guarantee that even if he
found something wrong in there that there was anything he could do to fix
it. So, it did not elect to have the procedure. At this point I am
starting to think about the sling and the artificial sphincter.
Good luck to you.

Hi Tdub.
I'm Ron in Chicago.
I will be having surgery in March at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in
Chicago.
Is this the same Hosp. that you're speaking of?
I'm sorry to hear about your troubles and hope that you keep at it and
improve.
Obviously, I'm scared and wondered where your hospital was.
Thanks and all the best,
Ron B.

Yeah, that's the hospital. I would try to get Dr. Catalona. I would
avoid JG in 10-200. When I told my story about the uro-surgeon to the
uro-incontinency dr's resident, he said that he had heard the same
about my uro-surgeon. Anyone who wants to discuss privately can email
me at twillia@gsb.uchicago.edu Just make sure you copy and
paste the following characters in the body of any messages to me (I
filter for it): #z1xk

Strange, but my email didn't copy completely, let's try it again (this
time I'll just give the part before the "at" sign): twillia so
adding that to the part in the previous message after the "at" sign
will give you me complete email address.
