Patient leaves $2 million to teach doctors manners

Associated Press
Feb. 23, 2005 09:50 AM

TOLEDO, Ohio - A woman who got bad news from a rude doctor has left
nearly $2 million for the Medical College of Ohio to teach its students
better bedside manners.

New York psychotherapist and Toledo native Ruth Hillebrand died of
cancer more than 10 years ago. School officials say her doctor called
her and told her she had a terminal form of the disease, then hung up on
her.

Last week, the Toledo college announced that Hillebrand's trust had
given the largest individual donation in the school's history. The money
will help train students on diagnosing and listening to patients.

The school plans to name its clinical skills center after Hillebrand,
whose father was a Toledo-area construction and insurance executive. The
facility is to be dedicated next week.

The medical college of Ohio is one of the top medical schools in the
country. Teaching good manners is very important. I had some radical news
dropped on me just about the same way and I freaked. The doctor swore she
had already told me that's why she ran certain tests. NOT! (I won't be
leaving a million dollars to anyone including my children.)

Moral of the story:  To raise a little money, be rude to your patients.
They will make a big donation to your institution to teach you better
manners.   That donation doesn't help you directly, but it helps build
up somebody's little empire, and that person now owes you.  Cash in your
chips at an opportune time.  Rudeness pays!

The day I fired my vague incompetent Uro, I asked him was he a Chicken
Sexer when he started out. He looked a bit puzzled.

I haven't paid his final Bill yet from Sept 2004. When I get the next
threatening letter from him, maybe I'll write a check for 5 cents,
showing my intent to pay, eventually :)

"Vague incompetent..." I like that. I think I'll steal it for use elsewhere.
