Thanks, Steve. BUT, in every silver lining there seems to be a cloud. Had my
annual physical Monday. Result of glycohemoglobin (diabetes test) was 6.0,
upper limits of normal. I guess borderline diabetic. Getting set up for a
dietary consult at local hospital. Time to get my eating and exercise habits
back in shape.

Oh well, if it isn't one thing.........

Jerry, being 3 mos post-RP I try to "lurk" this ng everyday and can relate
to a bunch of the discussions - however, quite frankly I don't understand a
lot of the numbers that you folks are talking about - but, I am going to
take a few of the "signatures" of this group in with me to my appt in 2
weeks with my crotch sturgeon and ask him to help me create mine.

However, at the same time my new primary doc told me I could be dying of PC
he also told me that I am Type II diabetic because my sugar was 114 (fasted)
at 10 am in the same blood test... arg.   and, wanted me to enroll in one of
those classes at a diabetic clinic.  (I guess he was pretty confident that I
was gonna git over the "little" issue of PC - (lol)  I priced those classes
out (ouch - not covered by my insurance) and thought I'd buy an Ultra
One-Touch first.  Poked myself a bunch of times each day for a week or so
just to get an idea of how sugar levels go up and down after each meal...
and, found that first thing in the morning I was only 88 - 94...  Arg..  I
can't find anybody (other than my doc) that suggests that that number is
close to Type II diabetic...  What is this gycohemoglobin test you are
talking about???  (I'm sure I should be asking this on another ng, someplace
- but, seeing how you mentioned it - I though I would ask...)

"Oh, well, if it isn't one thing....."

(I don't know if you recall my first post a couple months ago, but the
reason I LIFE SAVINGLY and FORTUNATELY changed primary docs 5 months ago
(now) is because my "old" doc wouldn't work with me on this horribly painful
lower back...  Well, I just had the MRI - and, yep - they are hinting at
fusion... arg...  However, I'm really going to be taking my time on "this"
decision...  I just can't visualize a sore belly, sore back - and, NO SUGAR
all at the same time.  lol)

Paul

63 years old
09/04 - PSA 10.4 - Gleason 7 (will find out the split and location, and new
PSA next week)
11/04 - RP - said they "got it" - spared left (or, right - forget which)
nerves
2/05 - sore belly inside and out - no pee problems (standing or sitting) -
no erections (yet) - back to pretty vigorous exercise (light crunches) -
kinda depressed about the obvious onset of "old age" - arg...
JerryW - 12 Feb 2005 17:22 GMT
Paul,

Yes, I do recall your earlier post on this newsgroup.

I don't know which numbers are confusing you, but here is what my signature
means. On 2/11/04 I had a PSA of 2.6, but my primary doc felt a suspicious
lump while doing a digital rectal exam (DRE). I was 62 at the time. I had a
biopsy on 2/23 which showed prostate cancer (PCa), with Gleason score of
3+4, or 7 total. The staging was T2a, that is a cancer palpable by digital
exam (T2) and presumably confined to one lobe (a). I had a radical
retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) on 5/18, and the pathology results indicated
a Gleason 4+3=7 tumor (upgraded from the biopsy reading), that was present
in both lobes (T2c). This is also sometimes indicated by T2b. I've had three
PSA test since my surgery, and all three have been <.01, or undetectable
using the type of testing done by the Lab my urologist uses.

In answer to your question about the glycohemoglobin test, I'm new to this
whole pre-diabetic thing, but my understanding is that it is a blood test
that measures the glucose levels over a period of time. This is different
from the glucose test to measure your present blood sugar level before you
eat, after, etc. The result of this test, I believe, is expressed in a
percentage, with under 6.0 being normal. My result came back 6.0, which my
doctor indicated was the high end of normal. I have not yet been diagnosed
with diabetes. Presumably, I can prevent or delay the onset of Type II
diabetes with proper diet and exercise.

Again, I know next to nothing about these tests and about diabetes
generally. I think I'm going to be learning a lot more about it, though. I'm
sure there are more knowledgeable people on this ng who will be able to
expand upon or clarify or correct what I've said. I know there are several
diabetics on here. And, I'm sure there are excellent neswgroups dedicated to
the subject.

By the way, I'm 9 months out from my surgery, now and I haven't had a sore
belly for quite awhile, so I'm sure that nuisance will go away soon. I
wasn't doing any crunches, light or otherwise, though, while my belly was
sore. Sorry about the back, though...that, I know, can be a REAL and
persistent pain.

Ref: Type II dibetes:
If your fasting AM blood test is less than 120 that is good. The blood
test that is taken by the Dr. is a way of getting an idea of how blood
sugar is used across time (3 or more months). If it is around 6 that is
great. One real test that show if your pancreas is processing sugar
correctly is the insulin resistance test. It involves drinking a
sickening sweet concoction and getting a blood draw every 30 min or so
the next several hours. From that it can be shown how sugar is doing
and is a good way to diagnosis Type II.
I currently test my blood once a day in the morning. Take Avandamet
once a day. Blood sugar averages 85-95. Blood test has been under 7 the
last several tests.
Lurker replying to your diabetis questions.
Beverley - 12 Feb 2005 20:23 GMT
114 is a little high for fasting but those 80's aren't. I'd ask what you ate
the night before your blood sugar test? They don't usually say diabetic
until you hit a 120 - 140 fasting blood sugar. I'd ask to have the test
redone and show him your home monitor readings. (Just write them down on a
piece of paper.) But they keep changing the rules for us. They used to say a
BP of 120/80 was normal now they want it lower than that. Pay attention to
what you are eating. All that added sugar in our American diet is not good
for anyone. And oh, does the sugar lurk in the strangest places!

Check with your local health department. The dietician at the health dept.
will be able to help you for free! Ours here even does a grocery store class
at the local supermarket where you walk through and they point out how to
read the labels what is good and what is not and what the dietary limits
are, etc. (It's very interesting and very informative.) And also with your
local hospital(s) to see if they have classes - the classes there should be
free, too.

wwcp@infinet.com - 12 Feb 2005 22:44 GMT
Thanks, folks....  I'll have my doc include a glycohemoglobin test next week
when I'm scheduled to have another PSA and cholesterol blood test just to
get him off my back (or, on my back) about this Type II thing.

Bev, I did think about what I ate (and, "drank") the night before - and, it
never seemed to affect my sugar level in the morning.  I always attributed
my higher sugar reading in the docs office to them being later in the am -
and, because I was probably a little stressed about having 9 gallons of
blood drawn for such a little test...  (lol)  But, like a dummy I never did
wait until 10 am to take a fasting test at home with my One-Touch...  I will
tomorrow...

AND, I have been reading labels and watching what I eat like a hawk ever
since my new doc gave me my first blood test 5 months ago and found I had:
high cholesterol (230 - down to 123 in 4 weeks with diet and 10 mg Lipitor -
taking only 5mg, now), high blood pressure (140/95 - down to 125/80 in 4
weeks with exercise), high sugar (I'm watching my sugar intake and we're arm
wrestling over this one right now) and HIGH PSA 10.4 (down to virtually zero
in 3 hours on 11/12/05 - lol.)  I don't drink pop anymore, I drink only
reduced sugar orange juice and 0% fat milk, no ice cream, cakes, sweets,
cookies or anything with saturated fat... Oatmeal every morning with just
fruit - no sugar or milk..   Trying to be a good kid...  (lol)   Should have
YEARS AGO... AND, I FLOSS... lol

Your PSA's been there before. It may travel like a sine wave.

The 0.0x numbers are really good :).

If I may be so rude, what area of your body is being treated by the
Lupron, seeing you had an RRP?

Rude?  That's what we're here for.

Lupron is an androgen deprivation therapy.  My bills say "chemotherapy", but
it's not chemo in the way you and I perceive chemo.  It is a chemical
therapy that causes your body to think that you have enough testosterone, so
your testicles simply don't produce testosterone.  Without testosterone, the
PCa cells, wherever they might be, are starved to death or to hibernation.

I'm on the same thing "Lucrin" = "Lupron", only mine is up front to
shrink the gland (from 72cc) prior to Rad and also lower the PSA
e.g. 21.0---->2.1-----0.45 in 12 wks. Testosterone has also gone to <
Castration levels.
