c palmer - 23 Dec 2004 02:24 GMT first, the great news - i got a phone call from the state DAV office today, and three letters......one from my congressman, one from the VA, and one from the DAV. all telling me that i will get my service connected disability for prostate cancer from vietnam and a nice back pay check. great christmas present that i wasn't expecting.
to the other vietnam vets, hang in there and push the claim the best you can. it has taken me 22 months to finally get what was entitled to me.
and the other news. the weather is terrible here. i''m in the area that is getting blasted by the weather maker in the mid-west. we have about a foot of snow on the ground now. five counties have already declared a state of emergency and the city of evansville has declared a state of emergency - emergency vehicles only on roads. and we still got close to blizzard winds tonight, temps in the low teens and another foot of snow due to drop in of us. sure doesn't sound like southern indiana, kentucky area - does it?
well, everyone wanted a white christmas. how's that old saying go? be careful what you wish for - you just might get it...
going to curl up by the fireplace and enjoy the flicker.
merry christmas everyone......

Forecast for Vanderburgh County Updated: 8:30 PM CST on December 22, 2004 Winter Storm Warning tonight... Overnight Snow...with near blizzard conditions at times. Total snow accumulation 14 to 22 inches. Blustery with blowing and drifting snow.
Winter Weather Statement Expires 9:00 AM CST on December 23, 2004 Statement as of 6:01 PM CST on December 22, 2004 ... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 am CST (7 am est) Thursday... .. Near blizzard conditions expected tonight... Significant heavy snow will continue to affect southeast Missouri... southern Illinois... southwest Indiana... and much of western Kentucky tonight. Look for an additional 4 to 10 inches of snow... on top of what fell during the day. The highest snowfall totals are forecast along a line from Johnson County in southern Illinois... to Evansville and Pike County Indiana. Amounts will be slightly less to the north and south of that line. This will result in total storm snowfall accumulations ranging from a low end of 6 inches to a high end of 22 inches. In addition... strong and gusty winds in the 15 to 30 mph range will combine with the wintery weather to produce near blizzard conditions tonight. Wind chills of zero to 10 below zero are expected across the entire region.
Any travel is strongly discouraged. Roadways will be nearly impassable. If you leave the safety of being indoors... you are putting your life at risk. Public Information Statement
Numerous reports of freezing rain... sleet and snow have also been reported across west Kentucky. The heaviest snow depths were along a line extending from Cape Girardeau Missouri... northeast through Harrisburg Illinois... and Fort Branch Indiana. Again... this area will receive yet another 6 to 9 inches of new snow overnight. In addition... the surface low pressure system will intensify as it moves up the west side of the Appalachian Mountains. This will increase wind speeds through tomorrow morning. Blowing and drifting of snow will be a major hazard. Near blizzard conditions are expected many locations in the quad state area. The National Weather Service in Paducah wishes to thank all of the spotters... cooperative observers... law enforcement and emergency management personnel who have provided timely snowfall reports.

DonC - 23 Dec 2004 20:01 GMT Hi Curtis,
The greatest snowfall on record here was in 1967 -- 24" followed by 7" the next day. Lucky for me I was in North Carolina just finishing Army basic training. The storm which had closed everything down for 3 or 4 days. We got back just as thing were getting back to normal. Bad news was we rented a house and had to shovel the 31" out of the drive way - but I was in peak physical shape thanks to the Army so it was more fun than work : )
I have a brother who lives outside of Oxford, Ohio about 40 miles north of Cincinnati. Says he's got about 20" from this storm with drifts as high as 5 feet! Yikes! . Don

Stephen Jordan - 23 Dec 2004 20:27 GMT Responding to the folks who are bragging about their weather, I have to say that the temperature here in Scottsdale, Arizona is 56 degrees F (13 degrees C), humidity 16%. About average.
If I want snow (I don't) I can head for the high country (I won't).

And the scenery is *always* beautiful.
And the snowbirds who have the sense to escape the Frozen North bring us jillions of $ every winter (the other 10 months of the year); thus we can afford the AC.
And, as the State motto sez, "It's a dry heat."

I.P. Freely - 23 Dec 2004 23:45 GMT I know dry heat; the RH in NM hits 3%. But NM temps run about 20 degrees cooler because of the altitude. I think NM's motto is, "Think THIS is hot? Try AZ!" ;-)

Er, does IP live in NM?
Regards,

I.P. Freely - 24 Dec 2004 00:59 GMT I lived there twice, for 18 years total. Loved the weather, even if it DID mean buying my lip balm and hand lotion by the case. It's no wonder the rest of the country is FINALLY catching on to living in the desert. I "discovered" it 30 years ago, and wouldn't live anywhere else.

Heather - 23 Dec 2004 23:28 GMT Aarrgghh!! We had a foot of snow today (30 cm).......and it started with a layer of ice, then snow, now ice again. Needless to say, nobody is getting home very fast (6:23 pm EST).
BUT....would it really be Christmas without lots of snow?? Nope. However, my daughter is sitting here growling about it.....she lives in Vancouver where it rains all the time, snicker.
Merry Christmas to all.....Heather 8-))

mrbill@misterpond.com - 23 Dec 2004 17:33 GMT Great news!!! A friend of mine recently started getting benifets for his diabetis. Seems they found a connection with Agent Orange, so now all his supplies and care are covered by the VA, and he is concidered disabled. Don't know what percentage. It's about time the VETS started getting taken care of. Merry Christmas!

nobody is coming or going right now, not even the airport - it's shut down.
i'm sure it will get better as the day goes on. it's really a bad time to happen this time of the year with christmas travel in mind.
so far, i'm still shaking off the depression that i've been dealing with all year. again, thanks for everyone who helped me through that part of my life.
you know, i haven't heard anyone play or hum the song, "let it snow, let it snow, let it snow"

Outlivecancer - 30 Dec 2004 08:33 GMT >Of course not; the ACLU would sue them for thinking about Christmas. We are all grateful in this time of sorrow and grief in the world to have a healing space to go to,so much grief in Asia and in life.I feel your pain at the loss of symbols that give you a tangible feel for the greater world outside ourselves.Yet it is precisely times like this that we must transend the lower self and try to feel fellowship for our common humanity this is a healing space for living and for for overcoming cancer and I wish you well in your journey there.
