I was wondering if anyone here has a port. I know that most of you (thank
God) are still in the curable stage and I haven't found Phoenix5 to be a
right fit, but I was looking for any info even 2nd hand.
1. did the placement require an overnight stay?
2. how grueling is the maintainance of the site?
thanks for any info anyone has.

My BIL has a port for his lymphoma. They did it in the doctor's office. He
will have it 18 weeks.
The first day or two, he couldn't imagine having the thing for 18 weeks. He
could hardly move. Even at the time, he said he was just sore and that it
was probably perception. A week after installation, he was at the driving
range. He hardly notices it now.

Lori, I have a port. Nothing to it. Went in at 7:00 am outpatient clinic of
local hospital. Procedure done in 30 minutes under a general. Went home at
11:00 am. Allows you to fish, swim, shower, etc.....not like a "long line"
in the arm where you have to cover, protect, etc. Maintenance is pretty
simple....take Warfarin once a day to keep blood clots from forming. Port
can be accessed same day that it is put in.

Lori, I have one, too. Most of the Insertion day was waiting for the
surgeon..The incision where the port is inserted under the skin should be kept
clean and dry for a few days. You need to flush out the port with an injection
of about 10 cc of heparon(sp?) at least once a month, but they flush it out
before every infusion anyway. My wife flushed out the port every week when she
removed the adriamycin pump, rather than having to make an extra trip downtown.

Thank you. At this point the doc is leaving it up to Curt and the IV nurses
but I can tell that they are having trouble getting in his vein every month,
so with the increase in frequency (qmonth down to q3wks)
Having these responses has eased his mind a bit. My desk is in the living
room so I give him the highlights while he watches sportscenter : )
