I had the RRP on 12/1, released 12/4. Maybe someone will find this info
helpful or can shed some light.
I opted for an epidural for pain, and it worked fantastic. No pain during
entire stay, except for bladder spasms 2nd night after that had me in
tears. A shot of Toradol instantly helped, as did moving around a bit to
get the urine flowing thru catheter. For me, the catheter discomfort
during the 1st few hours was tremendous. I had to insist on some
medication to help with it. I had a prescription for anti-spasm med when
released, but never had to fill it.
The operation went well, with no lymph node involvement, but path report
not in. Took left nerve (grafted in a collagen tube), spared right nerve.
Until last night, was sleeping in my recliner with feet up as I feared
rolling around in bed. Finally last night risked bed, and should have
tried it from the start!
Discouraging news yesterday (1 week post-op) is that I get to keep the
catheter another week. Major bummer at first.
It was 5 days before I had a BM. They're now pretty regular, but to some
degree I dread them. It's the accompanying pain in the penis around the
catheter. Some muscles want to relax there, and a small stream of bloody
urine is released around the catheter. I hope this gets better.
I had major swelling in the scrotum. I expected some, but I felt like I
had Jabba the Hut growing down there. At about 5 days post-op, the
swelling started to subside, and now at 8 days is all but gone.
I stopped pain meds a day or two after coming home, but had recurring
low-grade fever of up to 101. That now seems under control (consistently
below 100), but only since I started Cipro (and will remain on for two
weeks). I don't think it would have gone down on its own. Out of
everything I reported to the doc, only this fever was of concern. Was
told to call if it went over 101.
If I move about much (walk around house, take stairs, walk outside), I get
a fair amount of blood in the urine. If still, it stays yellow or orange.
Pieces of what looks like tissue appear periodically. Was told this is
normal.
Thanks for listening!

John,
Excellent summary. I should have written up my hospital experience too,
but I was in too much pain. (Should have asked for that epidural thing.)
Everything in your summary sounds like what I was told was normal.
Best of luck for a speedy recovery and the all-clear.

I had the catheter for three full weeks, but did not experience major
problems with pain, skin eruptions, etc. Did not like it though, that
is for sure. I did not have much blood in the urine, or notice much
solid matter in the tube or bag. I understand that is normal,
however, as is the blood for the first few days.
Had the swollen testicles too. Like you, it was gone in a week or so.
I did have serious discomfort in the periteneum (sp?) for several
weeks post op. Most did not report that. I used the donut for a long
time because of that. Doctor just kept telling me it was normal.
I did not understand what you meant by the one nerve removed. Was
there Ca involvement, or ???
Good luck on the final path report. Thank you for a well drafted
report on your experience. Be sure to follow up as you progress.
Thank you.

I too had an epidural and something that was stronger than morphine. over
the years I've learned that eliminating the pain helps you heal faster.

I was unable to sleep in our bed until after the cath came out and even then
it was quite uncomfortable. I'm a stomach sleeper, so the recliner became
my friend.

I had my cath in for 12 days.

I was advised to take stool softeners and an anti-spasmotic for the bladder
spasms. worked great!!

Try to walk as much as you can - I think it helped me heal as well as I
have.
good luck on your recovery.
