Pee2 - 05 Sep 2003 21:34 GMT I am about 6 months post RP with no real problems (except no sex). However for some time now I need to take stool softeners every night and the situation is not improving, Anyone else with similar problem? Hank
David S. - 05 Sep 2003 22:59 GMT They had me take Milk of Magnesia every morning and mineral oil every evening after the surgery. When the catheter came out they told me to "return to a normal diet", so I took that to mean stop taking the MOM and MO. In the past week I have had problems with constipation so yesterday I started taking the MOM again. While that catheter was in I drank a lot of water, per instructions. After it came out I went back to a more normal intake of fluids. I wonder if I should drink more water? I eat a lot of fruit and salads, and eat whole grain cereals for breakfast. I thought that would keep me regular, but apparently not. While I was off work I walked every day. Now that I am back at work that has stopped. Maybe the exercise had something to do with this? I do not see how this can relate to the PCa though, can it? By the way, I am only one month post RRP. Thank you. David S.

Hank Steve Kramer - 06 Sep 2003 22:58 GMT There ought to be an 11th Commandment: Thou shalt drink more water and walk more miles all the days of your lives.

Hank David S. - 07 Sep 2003 00:57 GMT Make that 12. Every good gardener knows that the 11th commandment is "dig in the dirt"....

Steve M. - 07 Sep 2003 02:03 GMT David, Maybe your body misses the flaxseed that you took between the time of your biopsy and the surgery as part of a study. I'm sure you will be in the published results of that study due to the drop in your Gleason score from 6 to 5. I'm eating fresh plums instead of "dried plums"/prunes with good results. Steve M

When the catheter came out they told me to [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > Thank you. > David S. David S. - 07 Sep 2003 02:41 GMT Steve: That is a good point. With the flax seed stopping abruptly the day before surgery, I have forgotten about that entirely. Then it was MOM and mineral oil for three weeks, so the ground flax seed kind of moved out of my consciousness. My wife does get me the dried fruits, usually prunes and apricots, but I have not gotten back to eating those regularly since the surgery. I do not want to rely on MOM, or other artificial laxatives, so I guess I will try more fresh fruits and get back to snacking on the dried fruits. Does anyone use trail mix? The dietician told me that it was good because there were nutrients in the nuts, etc., that we may not get otherwise. What I found is expensive though. About four dollars per package. I think the brand was something like "365...". Thank you. David S.

The light bulb just went off. Ron (having grown up in the West Indies) loves fruit of all kinds (me, I don't).......but my daughter bought him 'dried mango slices' from a Chinese market in Vancouver and boy, do they work like prunes!!
If you don't like the taste or thought of eating prunes, try the mango slices. I would give you the name, but I don't read Chinese. You can get them in Filipino markets too. I am kidding you about the name, so if you want the brand, I will get it for you later.
Happy trails.......hmmm, that doesn't see quite appropriate......LOL!!

Throw away the stool softeners.....Drink water, and do walk. Do you walk at least 2 miles a day? If you say no to this, that is what may be the problem. Stool softeners are for people that do not exersize, and eat well.
When I got home from my surgery many moons ago, I had bottles of bladder spasm stuff, and big red pills for stool softeners, and vicadin for pain, and I used those the 1st night and felt like "heck" The 2nd day, I threw out all the pills inclucing vicodin...... I had prunes for snacks, and walked every chance I could. I drank lots of water......hey, fill the bag, what the heck. It helps. Funny, I felt better, slept well, and woke up ready for another day. I did it allover again except with no pills........but you need to walk...really.Its fun too! John Loomis

I got fed up taking pills. Bought a big bag of prunes and created a war zone. Man do they work. Began walking but not quite two miles. Managed just over a mile, drank water and felt fine. Don't need prunes anymore but they are here just in case. I am just like I was before surgery except that I pee better and I read in bed for something to do. Keep praying to the Woody Gods.

Steve Kramer - 06 Sep 2003 23:53 GMT Hmmmmmmmmm. I'll have to try prunes. I take Metamucil every morning. I drink and walk, but prunes sounds a whole lot better than Metamucil. Gees. I can't believe I never thought of that before. It's got to be one of the oldest old-people stereotypes.

Began walking but not quite [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > Chuck H. bowichpapa@webtv.net - 07 Sep 2003 14:41 GMT Here's the reason prunes work so well: . "Often associated with the elderly and their constipation problems, prunes do have a laxative effect that is much easier on the body than any medication, and just as effective. Since prune juice is equally effective, but lacking in fiber, some food chemists suggest that another constituent other than fiber is the real reason they are so effective as a laxative. Prunes contain an unidentified derivative of the organic chemical isatin, which is related to another natural substance called biscodyl, the active ingredient in some over-the-counter laxative preparations. Biscodyl is a contact laxative that induces the secretion of fluid in the bowel and stimulates contractions of the intestines to push waste through the colon more quickly and efficiently." . http://www.innvista.com/health/foods/fruits/plums.htm
