First of all let me say I have been looking in on this group for a few days
and impressed with what I've seen.
I lost my dad almost 2 years ago to thyroid cancer after 2 years of bad
choices by his doctors that he trusted. The first year of his family doctor
telling him the large lump in his neck was nothing to be concerned about,
even with the pain.
So I have made it a point to get as much info as I can so I can hopefully
make smart decisions with my doctor.
About 2 years ago I started having a problem getting from home to town
without needing to urinate , so being in mid 40's my family Dr. suggested
prostate exam and found enlarged and hard prostate and prescribed flomax and
antibiotic. This seemed to take care of problem in about 6 weeks or so.
About 2 months ago started having problem starting to urinate and
sometimes would wait and never get there. But when I did it was a weak
stream with dribbling after then later in day would find yellowish
dishcharge in underwear. I went to my Dr. and received prostate exam, which
was very painfull, unlike the one 2 years ago. I really picked up a
note of concern on his part as he told as he told me he found a ( as he
called it ) nodule in the center of my prostate. He then had his nurse call
a uroligest to get an appointment for me. When she told him it would be
about three weeks he became a little iratated and took the phone and spoke
directly to the doctor and arranged an appointment the next day and took
blood work at thjat time to try to have it for the other Dr.
I know this is dragging on but I like to be clear on things. When examed
by the uroligest he told me there was a nodule pressing against the tube
that runs through the prostate that drains the urine. He said he would do a
biopsy the next morning if I wanted but suggested that I drink a half gallon
of water a day and take zink for 6 weeks then come back to be checked again
to see if nodule shrinks. If no improvement then do biopsy.
Does this sound normal or should I see different Dr.
would really like some feedback on this and sorry for the long winded story.
Thanks. Ed . G

hi ed - i can certainly understand what you said about the trust of
doctors. my dad trusted them and they shorten his life quite a few
years. but that's another story.
you make a strong case for BPH conditions, plus the fact that you're
responding to treatment. you commented about a yellowish discharge,
again it leans towards prostatiis. you also stated that the doctor
found a hard nodule in the CENTER of the prostate. again, this is where
BPH is located.
now, remember, we are not doctors. but my comment to all of this would
be of concern and my question that i would ask you is this. what is
your psa number? if you can not answer that, then that is your starting
point. when you see the urologist, ask them to run your psa. as you
get more information about how you are getting treatment, please free to
post the results. i'm sure others will chime in.
but, without further input, i would say you are on the right track to
see the uro. it does take some time to see how things progress.
hope this helps.
