After going through all the advantages and disadvantage of the various
remedies (surgery, seeds, external beam radiation, etc.) to hopefully cure
my Gleason 6 prostate cancer,  I have failed to check on whether or not
Medicare (I am over 65) will pay for the hospitalization and surgical
procedure (I am leaning strongly towards radical prostatectomy) .  In
addition to Medicare, I am a retired Army Officer and have TRICARE for Life
as supplemental coverage.

Can anyone that has had the surgery give me a quick run down on:

1.  If Medicare covers the cost of the surgery

2.  Will my TRICARE for Life supplemental policy pick up the costs not fully
covered by Medicare

3.  I plan to have the surgery at the Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in
Winston-Salem.   I assume that this hospital accepts Medicare cost
assignments.

Thank you in advance

Roy:
You need to call the hospital and talk to a billing representative.
There should be staff there that has specialized knowledge in Medicare and
Tricare coverage, billing procedures, etc.  Of course, they will know if the
hospital accepts the Medicare and Tricare insurance.  My guess is that they
do, but one phone call should give you some reliable information.  Try the
web to see if they have a site and phone numbers to call for information.
Also, on the web there are sites for both CMS (Medicare) and MyTricare.
You should be able to find some answers there too.  Probably customer
service phone numbers also.  Be sure to exhaust those alternatives to see if
you get consistent information.
   Good luck to you.
   Thank you.

i'm retired us army. last july ( 2003 ), i had prostate surgery. i have
tricare prime and they covered the surgery. see representatives  at the
hospital who handle tricare and they will fix you up. good luck on your
surgery.

I also have Medicare and TriCare for Life. Both my wife and I have had
surgeries and other medical procedures done without it costing a cent.
The only thing we've paid for is exams foe glasses, they don't pay for
Optometrists.
