To those in this group who don't know me, my husband John had RPP on July
16, 2003.  While his lymph nodes were clear, the margins were not.  He was
at the beginning of Stage 3 when his prostate was removed.  The two visits
subsequent to his catheter removal found no PSA.

John recently saw his urologist for the third visit.  He was considering
injections so he can function.  He felt really humiliated because he was
given the injection at the doctor¹s then had to wait 45 minutes for the
doctor to come back and look at how it was working.  He has found out the
insurance won¹t cover the cost ($200) (no surprise). Rite-Aid then called
him on his cell phone at 6 pm yesterday and told him they don¹t have the
injection kit.  He¹s thinking of trying Viagra one more time.  The doctor
tried to talk him into the implant (typical surgeon) but John told him we
had discussed that and decided on the injection.  John has been getting hot
flashes and told his doctor so.  The doctor decided to have a PSA test done
as a result.  We are awaiting the results.

Hot flashes?  With undetectable PSA, he's not on hormone therapy, is he?

No he's not.  His PSA was .01 - we received the results today.

Deb / John:

don't give up on the meds. Healing takes time.
i did not have any nerves spared, had a nerve graft and it took over
18 months for the meds (viagra, levitra) to finally work. Used
injections in the between period. I have read other posts / stories
documenting lengths of time of 2-3 years until erections return. Good
luck whatever path yopu choose.

Peace....Bill

Hello Debbie,
I am not sure what the hot flashes are from unless he had hormone
abatement treatment prior to RP.
If he did then that may also influence erectile function.
I had the injection process also.  The first time I did it the Dr. injected.
The next day, I came back and he wanted me to try, and adjusted the dose.
It was a very helpful therapy, and did have it's ups and downs.  I am not
being funny.  There may have been pain sometimes, and then sometimes it
worked fine.
After 2 years, the nerves healed and Viagra worked, and no more injection.
My Insurance was also very bad at agreeing to pay.  I said hel with it, and
paid for the treatment.
I bought syringes, and prostaglandin....It lasted about 6 months.....it was
about similiar.
Do not go for implant until all else fails...It takes time to heal nerves.
It took me 2 years plus.  If I had an implant then forget ever having a
regular erection.
Anyway, the Hot Flashes are something I am not sure of, and I would get the
injection method for trial and error.
It really helps with supplying blood to the area, and does have some
problems...The bark is worse than the bite.
Good wishes,
John Loomis

Debbie:
Hot flashes?  What did the doctor say about that?
Have you tried the pump?  It is certainly clumsy foreplay, but it works,
no drugs, and you pay for it once.  Also, with that the getting blood in the
organ is accomplished.  My Rejoyn pump cost about $150.00 on the internet.
Best of luck to you both.  I hope the PSA is okay.
   Thank you.
