Entirely warranted.  In fact your numbers are almost identical to mine,
although I was 52 at the time.

I found the biopsy painless.  Some others here weren't so lucky.  I think
some were too tense.

Can the doctor feel anything suspicious with a DRE?

hi howard - what can i say, except i think you are about to become a
member to a club you didn't want to join.

you have the stats for the reason of a biopsy.  psa is elevated, free
psa is low and the biopsy can confirm the reasons you are already
thinking along those lines.

i hope there is another reason for the psa tests to be in the numbers
they are.

but the biopsy is a little uncomfortable but not painful.

Talked with you before Curtis... not too worried aout Biopsy. had one
before..I worry about the results.. almost all "Finger exams" sid I had
an enlarged prostate...forget what they call it ??? also had the scope
put up my penis and Dr said had slight blockage into Bladder and he
wanted to do a TURP.  What scares me is the lower rt back/hip pain I
have had for years (Was an Auto Mechanic 25 yrs..pushing and lifting)
The frequent urination at times (Comes and goes)  mostly at
night..sometimes 7 tmes sometimes none. Lately been getting  shock like
pains down rt leg..only laying in bed at night..been diag with vert neck
problems also..could be pinched nerves ?   I am a worry wort  subject to
panic attacks...keep in touch     Howie

It is very unlikely that your leg and other problems are caused by
prostate cancer.  That only occurs in advanced prostate cancer when the
cancer gets to the bone.  If your biopsy turns out positive for prostate
cancer,  they may want to do a bone scan just to be sure,  but it is
really not worth worrying about.

On the other hand,  you may very well have some disc problems.  Many
people do, particularly if they have been doing the sort of work you do.
If you are getting symptoms down the leg, a herniated disc can be a
real possibility, and unlike metastatic prostate cancer in the bone,
that is not rare.  It it gets bad, as I can attest from personal
experience, it can be very painful, although it is rearely life
threatening as cancer may be.  So it might be wise to consult an
orthopedist or other back specialist.  A lot can be done to avoid the
worst by learning how to lift things, and by doing regular stretching
and stregthening exercise.   Once the back specialist has determined
just what the situation is, he or she should refer you to a physical
therapist.  A good physical therapist can provide invaluable help in
avoiding pain and being able to do the sorts of things one needs to do
in daily life.

I've had both early prostate cancer, treated by a radical prostatectomy
and some herniated discs.  The latter were by far much worse than the
former.

Howard,
I too was worried about the lower back pain when I was diagnosed as
having Prostate Cancer. I went to see the Doctor and they did an MRI on
my back only to find that I had two bulging disks that were pushing on
the sciatic nerves. It causes my right leg to be a little numb and
tingly. You might have a similar condition. Had a RRP January of this
year and so far so good. Have had two dilations of the bladder/urethra
junction and looking like I might need yet another as my ability to pee
is slowly getting worse. (I catheter (catheterize?) myself every three
days right now).

The biopsy for me was a cinch. Just relax.

Best Regards,
Philski

Hi Howard
I am not a doctor and your milage may vary.  Have you and your Doc been
tracking your PSA for a while?  Has it been rising?

My Doc put me on a short course of antibiotics to see if that would
bring down the PSA which would be an indication of prostatitis.  My PSA
did come down but not enough for him so he suggested Biopsy.  My first
Biopsy was clean (no cancer) my second biopsy 2 years later showed
cancer.  I look at the PSA as a check engine light on the car and the
biopsy as the engine diagnostic.  I am very glad that I had the engine
diagnostic done and that i had an RRP and that the ca is gone pending
my next PSA.

My Biopsies were not bad, a bit uncomfortable but over very quickly
Please bear in mind that with PCa, the earlier the better.

My PSA July  01 to Aug 04 varried from 4.81 to 5.65  and  even went
down to 3.7   June 03. Up and down in last 4 years or so...Dr did Finger
exam and said enlarged Prostate...

yep, Benign HyperProstate(BHP)- after a while it will start to constrict the
urethea and you get to have it reamed out.  The high PSA will interfere with
Prostate Cancer diagnosis, if you ever get it.  I guess you have to watch PSA
velocity and free PSA.
Beverley - 16 Sep 2004 02:06 GMT
Ok, from what you have said you seem to have a little BHP but that free PSA
is a big indicator that you might also have PC. Get the biopsy!!

If it is cancer the BHP might not allow you to have brachytherapy and your
only alternative would be a RP. There are several forms of that now
available but let's not cross those bridges until you've had the biopsy!!
Biopsies are a pain in the *ss but it's a quick one! LOL
(I think most guys will agree a dental procedure can be worse!)

What,s an RP ?
Glenn Enoch - 16 Sep 2004 12:26 GMT
RP = Radical Prostatectomy, surgical removal of the prostate.  RRP =
Retropubic Radical Prostatectomy, the surgeon makes an incision below the
navel.  LRP = Laproscopic Radical Prostatectomy, the surgical instruments
and a scope are inserted through small incisions in the abdomen

Hi Beverly,  I think having teeth done, and biopsy, are very similiar...Pain
in the "....ss"
I hope I spelled it ascurately
I would rather have the pain in the a.s, than the pain in the joints when
the cancer matastisized.
My 2 peanuts.
