Hi,

My cancer is localized and low risk. I am 68 years old and have been
recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. My biopsy results are as follows...

PSA 8.49
Adenocarcimona-prostrate Gleason Grade is 3 + 3 score is 6x10 involving
one of 4 core biopsies approximately 5-10% of tissue involved.
Perineural invasion in not identified.

I would like to hear from patients who have had seed implant radiation
only and could you please answer the following...

1. What are the side effects of therapy?
2. What are your chances of complete recovery with no reoccurrence?
3. If you had to choose would you choose surgery or external beam
radiation or 3D radiation therapy or just hormone therapy? Please elaborate?
4. Where did you receive your radiation treatment?
5. Have your PSA levels gone down in 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, 8
months and how much?
6. Did you have any urinary problems due to this?

Grateful for your support and reply,
Vini

Sounds like an early case which should be curable with appropriate therapy.

I had surgery, so I can't comment, except for one remark below.

Hormone therapy would not generally be recommended as a primary method
of treatment in a case like yours.  There are a few oncologists who
advocate it, but they are a small minority.   However,  short term
hormone therapy is often recommended in conjunction with radiation,
since it appears to make the cancer cells more susceptible to radiation
damage.

http://www.prostatepointers.org/seedpods/chron.html
is a site with personal accounts of the brachytherapy experience.
You'll find lots of useful information of the sort you're after if you
browse there, especially in Vince DiCarlo's account.

I had 110 seeds implanted in 1998.  No particular problems until this
year 2004 when my PSA skyrocketed to 10.5.  I had an ultrasound and
biopsy, cancer was found in several spots.  Going in for a CTR and
bone scan next week and then a plan of attack.  I am looking at the
Novalis Shaped Beam procedure but at this time I do not know if that
will be applicable.  Certain procedures are not possible after seed
implants.  Doctor will discuss alternatives after the above mentioned
procedures.  I would suggest that you check out the Novalis Shaped
Beam procedure.  It is new and only a few hospitals have it.  Just
search for it and you can come up with one near you to consider.

I had believed that the seed implant would solve the problem but
everyone is different.  Just one more thing to consider.

Vini,
As a recent seed recipient I can only answer a couple of your questions, I'm
62 and had a lower PSA but otherwise similar statistics.

I was on Lupron for six months prior to the implant and will continue for
another couple of months, so no PSA testing has been done yet.

Immediately following the implant there were no urinary problems to speak
of, however, urgency and retention problems at night slowly developed and
peaked at about one month and disappeared in about the same time frame.

So far the most deleterious side effects have been from the Lupron which
have been the same as everyone else reports.

My treatment decision was based on discussions that included statistical
probabilities, family history of longevity and quality of life issues with
my urologist and two other Drs. If I were to make a decision today, I would
repeat the same one.
The radiation oncologist who performed my implant was Blasko trained and has
performed more than 8000 procedures in NJ.
