I am sorry to hear about your father's condition.
As far as I know, when cancer has spread there is nothing to
be done, especially for a man of his age, to cure him. There
may be ways to ease the pain.
Perhaps your relatives in Europe can find a doctor or hospice
that specializes in treating pain who can make him more
comfortable. Perhaps family members can spend time with
him and write down or videotape or tape record stories that
he can still tell about his early life that the family might like to
know and that he might like to pass on.
Best wishes to you and your family.

HI Ana,
so very hard but there is hope for a loving experience now.I don't know which
culture you are in but we have been more open in USA in recent years with no
shame.Going to see him and making sure he is comfortable with good meds and air
and light and family is important.
Take Care.

Very sorry to hear of your trials. Like the others have said, your Dad
appears to be in advanced stages and his health isn't good. My
suggestion is to consult hospice for more detailed support. At his
age, it'd probably be more important to get him relief for his aches
and pains so that he can have as much comfort as possible.

Hi Ana,
You are doing the best. Caring for your Dad.
You cannot change anything, but only help. Give your Dad a big hug, and
love him.
That is what most Dad's expect...I know he may have hid this from you all
along...
Yes, Dad's love to be cared for specially....even if you cannot fix it!
Thank you for sharing your problems, and the solution is in caring for your
Dad.
Fixes.......we hope for.

Ana,
I am not a doctor, but from what I have seen and read, no, a patient
does not recover when prostate cancer has spread to the bladder. My
condolences to you.
If he has kidney failure, you should assume that he will not live for
more than a few days or weeks. Is it important to you to see him
again while he is alive, or will you be satisfied just to attend the
funeral? Decide now.

Hi Ana,
The folks here are right.
The hope would be that his symptoms are taken care of (by a doctor or
"hospice"..specialists in end of life care).
If there's cancer in his bones, he'll have a lot of pain.
If not, he'll likely die from anemia (from the bleeding) or kidney failure.
If you are able to go, this might be your last chance to see him, while he's able
to speak. Check with relatives /friends there or doctor/nurse and they will
probably tell you.
If you are unable to go, please feel free to stay with them here or on
alt.support.cancer (add this to your list of newsgroups, if you wish support from
us over the next few weeks..)
We can be there for you.

ANA,
Go to http://www.phoenix5.org and look up advanced prostate cancer. It will
help you to understand what is happening and maybe to direct whoever might
be there with your dad to provide a better quality of what life he has left.
Depending on just how badly the cancer has spread there are several things
they might be able to do to help but nothing is going to make him whole
again. Pain is controllable. They can not keep all the pain away but they
can make him more comfortable.
At 82 he's lived a pretty long life. Focus on the positive things, remember
the good things and allow him to live to the end his life with dignity.
I know this is very hard for you being so many miles away. Even phone calls
are still very expensive. Do what you can to be there for him. Some airlines
do provide special fares to allow family members to return home during a
crisis or for a funeral - I'm not sure if that applies to oversees or only
on domestic flights but it is worth checking. Also shop around with long
distance phone companies for the best oversees rates.
(((HUGS)))
Bev

Bev,
A co-worker that just returned from a trip to Italy for the same reason
told me that Continental does offer reduced rates and Alitalia does not.
