The pictures of the devastation brought by Charlie are terrible. I pray that
no-one in our group was affected. To anyone who was affected or knows of
one of us who was, let us know if there's any way we can help. I don't know
what kind of help we can give but I'm sure any kind of support will help.

I got lucky, the storm didn't go far enough up Florida to affect me,
and I heard of thousands getting out of the way, but sadly, many
refused to heed warning that it would be in the magnitude of Andrew.
They apparently lost their gambles.

The eye of the remnant (tropical storm Charlie) passed over us a few hours
ago. Just brought us more rain. We are fine. We had family in the path over
central FL and they had no damage. My sister's friend is without water,
electric and now, apparently phone - she's on the gulf side of FL near
landfall. We are waiting to hear something.

Good to hear that this thing isn't nearly as strong as before. Glad
you're ok!

Wondered how you were making out down there. Glad everything is okay.
Up here in the Northern Neck, we pretty much got off scot-free.
Those poor folks in Florida, though. What a disaster!

It is still raining today. I'm so sick of rain!!! Of course when you look at
the pictures of Florida and see such total devastation I know I should not
whine about more rain. My house is intact and so are the cars (we lost one
to Isabel last fall). I have fresh water running through the taps, obviously
my electricity is working, the new central AC unit is keeping us cool, dry
and comfortable, all of the family is safe and sound, and the leaves are
still on the trees. (After Isabel the leaves were everywhere - it was a
strange sight! Our world had turned green - cars, houses, streets, etc. were
coated in green leaves.) One of the high schools near us with an official
rain gauge received over 14 inches (over 100 cm) of rain yesterday. We are a
bit soggy!

Glad to know that you are safe and sound, Bev.... as well as all your
family!
I hope all of our other Group Members were spared damage, too! I just
watched the evening news report.... the damage is incredible! :(

My mother, sisters, brother, son and grandchildren are in Seminole Fla. on a
kind of family reunion. Actually, my Mother is in a nursing home there and
they were very prepared. Thankfully, they were spared and what started out
as terrifying prospect turned into a really fun time as they all gathered at
my sisters house to be together for the storm. The camaraderie and
margaritas made for a fun time. (I guess!!) They hadn't seen each other in
some time. The more I see on TV the more thankful I am they missed it all. I
wish others were as fortunate.

Our island is just inboard of North Captiva and the eye of the storm
came directly over us with 145+ mph winds. It moved so fast that we had
no storm surge.
.
Our end of the island is a total catastrophe...all poles snapped off so
there is no electricity or phone...cell phone towers damaged so no
communication in or out. Reports are that it looks like a war zone.
.
We're north for the summer and having great difficulty getting info. So
far we know our west-facing windows are broken out, our lanai is gone
taking along a 5' X 15' section of roof plywood with it. All shingles
gone from roof. All beautiful tropical vegetation including 6 citrus
trees strewn far and wide.
.
Hopefully our representative will be allowed on the island tomorrow to
close up the house and protect from further rain damage and entry by
local wildlife...ugh. Can't imagine what a moldy mess this will be.
The only good thing is that we have a windstorm policy.
.
Next door neighbors have worse damage and were within 3 days of house
closing sale on theiri North Captiva house when Charlie totaly destroyed
it.
.
We were just getting our lives together after a terrible year with
gleason 9 PC, RRP, and adjuvant IMRT and ADT. There must be a reason
for all this, but we're not seeing it at the moment. Don't mean to cry
on your shoulders, but you did ask.

Houses are just things. They contain memories and "stuff" but they are just
things. The important thing is that your family was not there and you all
are okay. You had insurance and that is good. It never seems to be enough to
cover everything but at least you can rebuild, replant and start fresh.
Maybe this is an opportunity to just start over again.
I know right now you are devastated by what happened. I know there are
people who will say that adversity strengthen you or that God doesn't give
you more than you can handle. My first retort is: "So, explain nervous
breakdowns to me!" I do wish I knew why thing seems to happen when you are
already down. But it is just a house. It's your home but it is a structure
and it can be rebuilt.
FEMA is a process but there will be people to help you submit your claim. Do
submit even if right now you don't think you will need it. My daughter works
for a property management company and her job is to go into properties that
have been destroyed by hurricanes and other disasters and make them "whole"
again. It is not easy. When Isabel came through here we filed initially but
didn't complete the process because we didn't need it. My daughter made us
do the paperwork. We only lost a car and had some minor problems.
Fortunately the insurance took care of most all of it. The rest was just
hard work on our part. We could have finished the claim process but figured
it was not worth it for the small amount. Some things you just suck up and
push onward. A year later it is just a distant memory.
You are safe and lives are the most important things. At least you weren't
in the house when it happened. So pick up the pieces, jump thought the red
tape and consider yourself one of the lucky ones. Hurricanes are random,
they don't choose their victims. You will get through this.
If I can do anything to help please let me know!!!

Thanks, Bev,
.
I know we'll get through this, we've built two houses in the past so
construction is no mystery to us. We learned last night that there is
so much interior water damage the entire inside will need to be stripped
to the framing. This will be much harder than doing new construction
and how we'll get it dried out before terminal mold sets in without
electricity will be a challange. Sounds like generators and a 1400 mile
trip to live in the van and work in the heat and mosquitoes to me. A
lot easier when we were young and arthritis free. We'll try to think of
this as an "adventure." HA Guess this is payback time for past years
of good health and QOL, but we didn't need it all in one year.
.
Take care, Leah

Our interest is only .... curiosity. Due to alzheimers, my FIL and MIL had
to move from the house they built on Flamingo (abutting the beach), on
Estero Island, the island just south of Sanibel. Judging from the surge
predicitions, it's probably that the water was up to the first floor
(stilts) and maybe up to the second. But, we can't find out. No one we
knew has phone service.
