In April of this year my 38 year old
husband of 16 years was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After
researching all options we decided on radical prostatectomy for a cure
instead of treatment due to his age and type of cancer. So far recovery
has been great and things are improving daily. I thank God for letting
us find the cancer in an early stage before it reached the lymphnodes. I
love my husband dearly and would stand by him through anything. Now my
questions begin though and I have no where to turn for answers but here
and would appreciate any help I can get to try to understand what we are
going through. Without a nerve sparing procedure the doc told him he
could try viagra and penis injections which should work. First we had no
luck with the viagra but the doc wanted him to continue to use it daily
100 mg. and said "USE IT OR LOSE IT". That got expensive with no help
from insurance. Then we began the shots Edex which were costly too and
seemed to hurt my husband alot. The shots produce an erection we are able
to have intercourse with but not rock hard. We did not believe the doc.
when he said my husband would be able to reach an orgasm without an
erection but found this to be true. The doc told him if I was not around
go to the bathroom and do it himself but to use it daily. He is able to
take the viagra and reach an orgasm without an erection. But when he
takes the Edex and tries to have intercourse he can not reach one. The
pain from the shots come afterwards so its not the pain keeping him from
reaching one. This is the hard part for me. Is it me? I know he has went
through a major change and things will never be the same but it's hard
for me as a woman to understand. It makes me feel there is something
wrong with me. The doc. gave him a precription for ppp or trimix which
should be less painful afterwards and cheaper.Soon we will try them. I
realize these men that go through this have been through alot but seldom
do people know how much the wives go through. Being so young I was
always use to my husban <<message ends >>

Perhaps there was a typo.   If non nerve sparing surgery was done, one
would not generally expect Viagra to work.   Of course, the surgeon
might have spared the nerves without intending to, but that would be
sheer luck.

This woman and her husband need some good advice from a urologist who
specializes in impotence problems.  Someone should have explained about
the Viagra.   The should also have been told that the pain from
injections lessens in time, and that orgasms will probably improve over
time.   They might also find use of a pump a feasible way to proceed.
In circumstances like this,  if the couple is patient, optimistic, and
well informed, they can work things out in time.   But they need some
good information from an expert and some encouragement from a
sympathetic professional.

Where does one go to find such a professional, Leonard?
I saw a guy listed on the Web as an ED specialist.... and he was a dud! :(
Any suggestions on how to find someone who *specializes* in impotence... who
can be sympathetic.... without spending lots of time and money going to
every doctor around until one finds the right one?

Anyone know of a *REALLY GOOD* doctor for impotence in the Atlanta area??

Thanks!

I think you have to start off with a good primary care physician.  He or
she should be able to find a urologist who specializes in impotence.
Also, a local hospital may have a referal service.  Using the web is not
likely to be too helpful in finding a name to start.  But once you find
a name, you may be able to use the web to check background and
qualifications.

Fortunately I haven't had to referred yet, but my primary care physician
has so far referred me to very good specialists.  I'm fortunate to live
in an area with high quality medical care, so I have lots of choices.

The guy I'll be seeing next week is on the staff of Memorial
Sloan-Kettering, and is titled "Director, Sexual Medicine Program."
He is a urologist, whose specialty is listed as "Sexual and
Reproductive Dysfunction."  I'm not familiar with Atlanta hospitals,
but perhaps one could find such a program or specialty in a large
hospital or cancer hospital as part of the urology department.

My PCP is a good guy.... but he's in rural Georgia.  Not a lot of resources.
I asked my urologist who did my surgery in Atlanta for an ED Specialist.  He
said he didn't see that they could do anymore for me than had already been
done.  I've tried all the pills, the pump, the shots, the Muse..... I envy
those of you who have your erections back.  (Gee, I know that surprises
everyone! LOL..... I've been moaning about it for months now.... )

Take care.... I wish you all well!

Mike...Just wonder if RCOG could give you a lead or two to an ED
specialist.  They're in Georgia and must deal routinely with ED
resources...Best wishes and good health, Ron

That's a good idea, Ron.... had not even thought of it!  And I recommend
RCOG to people all the time if they are looking into seeds.... ;P

Thanks!!!
