After my RRP in March of 2000 it was determined that I had some tumor
left on my bladder neck.  I decided to have it radiated.  Yesterday I
went in to get set up.  They stuck something up my rectum and
something down my penis and generally made me uncomfortable.  I think
the doctor didn't go into detail on this before the procedure knowing
my history of canceling the procedure.  If so it was a very smart move
on his part.  :)

During simulation they usually fill the bladder with a colored liquid so it
will show up better. I'm sure they would have given you a few "happy pills"
if you had asked. The up the rectum part is a new one to me for this
procedure.

They explained to me that it is to prevent radiation from hitting the
rectum.  It was a measuring instrument of some sort.

Your situation sounds like mine as the was some cancerous cellls where
they spliced everything together (the apex of the prostate was the
tumor site). The purpose for the urethra dye is correct but I have to
agree the rectum thing is a new one on me also.  I saw the resulting
picture of the dye in the urethra and I am amazed at what they said
they saw.  For me it was just an uneducated smudge.  It did help them
target the beam and besides that I now have four tiny tattoos...and
didn't have to drive to Texas to get them. (That was in reference to
Oklahoma not allowing tattoos but they allow piercing...oh well,
enough of this OT)
I hope your treatments go as well as mine have.  Best of luck.

Just once I hope.  I go in next Thursday to see if everything-all the
radiologists measurements are ok and to see if the cat scan was ok.
If not I may have to do it again.  If so I am going to insist on some
sort of tranquilizer.

I had a couple of MRIs done that way.  What they inserted
in me was an antenna connected to a balloon and a shaft.
They push in the shaft until the antenna is very close to the
prostate.  Then they blow up the balloon to press it in tight.

It really wasn't bad at all.  Just imagine a baseball bat shoved
up the rectum by a football player who twists it around to get
a snug fit and then attaches it to a pressure hose to expand
the tip.

Sometimes they provide a cute nurse to smile at you
while they're doing it.

I had a cute nurse DOING the procedure.  She joked around a bit but it
was still very uncomfortable.

A doctor, of course, handled the other side.  Which is a good thing as
it probably would have scared the nurse.  :-))

I've read that an "intrarectal (IR) balloon device" is being used
sometimes, "to immobilize the prostate gland and localize the rectum, in
patients receiving dose escalated 3-dimentional (3D) conformal radiation
therapy".

Perhaps that's what it was.
