Today I saw Dr. Scardino at Memorial Sloane Kettering in NYC to finally have
my garden hose removed.  It's been 11 days since my surgery - RRP.  We also
received the news from the pathology report.  Although the cancer broke
through the capsule in two places, it was microscopic and my lymph nodes and
margins were clean!!  My staging, which was originally reduced from T2c to
T2b was offically diagnosed as T3a.  One thing that was done to me, which I
hadn't read about previously was that prior to catheter removal, my bladder
was filled with fluid.  Once the catheter was removed, I was then able to
start and stop my stream upon request.  I guess it was their way of
determining if the plumbing worked or not.  I've been waring a pad now for
4.5 hours and havn't leaked a bit - even after going to the local Chinese
restaurant and consuming a bowl of soup and a glass of water with my meal.
I'm off of all meds except for 10mg (half pill) of Cialas every other day.
I was told not to even attempt to do the kegels until Thursday and not to
even attempt an erection (uising a wholepill) for at least two weeks.  I was
gieven the green light to drink alcohol, smoke cigars and use my boat -
although not necessarily all three at once :>)

So far so good.

hi sandy - it's common for the staging to be more advanced in the path
report than when it is in the body.

in my case, i was dx'ed with T1c, which i though i had plenty of room to
play with as far as staging, but when the prostate hit the path table,
it was dx'ed post op as T2c which doesn't give much room.

but your report sounds terrific and your progress post op sounds even
better.  so enjoy the boat with drink in hand, and a big cigar in the
other, as you sit in the driveway.  :)   we know you ain't suppose to
drink and drive......right?   but you can still sit the boat and enjoy.

Sandy it sounds as though you are in the clover.  Enjoy, I'll have a
glass of La Romanee-Conti (lets say a close copy of) in your honor.

That just reiterates what you were already told: that the cancer
penetrated the capsule but didn't extend further and the margins are
clear.  Keep in mind that a post surgical staging will always be at
least T2.  T1 is only used for pre-treatment biopsy results.

That all sounds quite good.   Your chances of a complete cure are excellent.

I remember asking my urologist about whether or not having an erection
right after surgery would be a problem.  He said if it happened, they
would all shout Halleluyah!.  But of course it didn't happen.   My first
spontaneous morning erection was almost two years after surgery,
although I had been able to function reasonably well with Viagra from
about 18 months.   Now at four years I seem to get them fairly
regularly.   So don't be discouraged if progress is slow in that area of
your recovery.

Yeah, they did that to me as well, but the nurse told me it was to
deflate the balloon in my bladder. May have been to check the plumbing
as well, but didn't bother to tell me. Great report too! Now on to
<.01 PSA follow ups!

Hey Man,
You did it!  Now go on with living.  This is not the end of the world, and
thank to God, Buddah, Dr. Scardino, your wife, your kids, or some form of
giving thanks.
I would use all 3 at once.  Drink a beer, drive the boat, and smoke a cool
cigar.
Love your family, and do walk........Walk more than ever.  it helps.
John Loomis  RP 1999 T-2 or so.....7 on the richter scale......(earthquake)

I am glad one can do the job that 2 used to do!
Yep, it works.....Do I need do go into details?
I won't unless you ask.

Great News.

Well, since no one else did, I have to ask, are we talking
about Cialas, the ED drug here?

I hadn't heard of this being given as a routine post-operative
drug.  Did the doctor say why he prescribed it?  Have any of
you other guys been given this?

I am 5 weeks post-op and was prescribed a half pill (25 mg) of viagra
before bedtime every night since the day the catheter came out.  Some
recent research has suggested that this helps restore potency by fostering
nighttime erections.

I guess I'm one of the lucky? ones. I started getting wood while the
Foley was still attached. That was -not- a pleasant experience...

Hi Al,
I wasn't even given the discussion about Cialis, Viagra or Levitra
until a month after the surgery.  What's the theory behind this?  Is
it helping to get  blood flow back?  Is there any documentation in
regards to this?

There has been recent studies (none of which I can cite) that show a
significant decrease in post-RP ED when the person takes small, regular
dosages of Viagra.  I hadn't heard about Cialas, but it would seem to make
sense.

Can't locate the articles, but here's something from MSNBC that discussed
the studies, one U.S., one German--purportedly showing that nightly Viagra
can produce dramatic results.

Prior to my surgery we discussed using Viagra post-surgery as a therapy to
improve blood flow to the tissues.  When I mentioned that I had previously
tried Viagra and found it to cause my facial cheeks to become quite flushed,
Dr. Scardino suggested I try Cialis prior to surgery.  I tried one half a
pill one evening and found it to be more natural feeling than Viagra.
Starting last night I began a regimen of one-half a pill every other day.
In about two weeks time it was suggested that I take a whole one and see if
I can get wood.  I was also a bit surprised when I was also told that if I
do get wood, to go ahead and use it.

Sandy,

It sounds like you're over the biggest bump in the road. Now for the boat,
cigars and a cold one, enjoy them in good health.
