So here it is, one week away from my RRP. I guess the best thing is that
every day I've felt better and better, stronger and stronger. Not thrilled
about having a garden hose connected to me, but fortunately, it's scheduled
to come out on Monday. I take each day as it comes.
Walking is one of my best and favorite activities. I've progressed from
walking past just a few houses and returning, to today, when I felt strong
enough to walk around the whole block. I try to get out and and walk at
least 5-6 times a day.
My worst time is at bed time. I am a belly sleeper and it's just impossible
to sleep that way with the cath in and the incision. I find that I get
extreme anxiety lying on my back for too long. Last night I just gave up on
staying in bed and decided to try sleeping in my recliner and on the couch
some. I guess it worked, as I woke this am feeling as though I had one of
my best nights. I'm looking forward to having the cath removed.
To all those about to have surgery - I'm finding that the healing is going
much better than I had originally expected.

Hi Sandy,
Sounds like you're doing well. My walking experience was just like yours --
a few houses, a block, around the block and then around the lake -- two
miles!
I spent my first week on the couch for similar reasons. I'm a side sleeper,
either side and belly sleeper, I think I would have tangled myself in the
tubing had I tried sleeping in bed. It's almost impossible to belly sleep
on our couch and difficult side sleep so it worked well. Besides I kept
wierd hours for the first ten days or so. Watched Letterman or Leno
everynight so I'd be tired enough to sleep on my back all night. Also the
couch is lower than our bed so it was easier to exit it.
In short time you'll find the healing of the surgery is a small part of the
recovery. I find regaining continence and erectile function the hard part
(no pun intended). I'll be 3 months past surgery on the 28th.
Good Luck
Don

Sandy,
Sounds like you are well on the way to recovery. I slept in my recliner for
the first few weeks because I'm a side sleeper and the hose and I could not
agree on a good position.
Yeah, that walking feels good, doesn't it! I remember when I could walk
around the block -- felt like the greatest accomplishment of my life! Keep
up the good work!

Sandy,
I'm a belly sleeper too and I trained myself to sleep on my back while I
had the catheter and also after it was removed. I slept that way for
fear of an accident for quite some time, which NEVER happened. Now I am
18 months post and I sleep any way I want plus drink as much coffee as I
want also (not before bedtime though). For some unknown reason, maybe
extra tired from a road trip the day before, I slept for 9 hours and no
getting up. The last time I did that was.....well I can't remember..
I'm happy to see you are a walker, it's good for everything.
All things improve with time.

Very good news to hear! Here's to hoping continued recovery and low
(undetectable) PSA tests from now on.
