Hi everyone!
I am a Vietnam Veteran that on February 6th 2004 had RRP surgery, with
one nerve bundle spared.
Prior to the surgery November 7, 2003 my psa was 17.56 November 22nd
psa 22  biopsy on December 10th Gleason 3+4 involving 6 out of 10
needle cores on the right side of prostate. December 2003 CT scan was
negative for metastasis
I talked to some friends and it was recommended that I find the best
surgeon that I could find and that dose the surgery very often I ended
up at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN.
February 6th 2004 I was admitted for the surgery psa at admission was
21. I had been given some type of pill to slow the growth of the
cancer but do not know what it was, at this time.
Surgery was uneventful I was up and walking the next day doctor said
he believed that he was able to remove all the cancer and was able to
save the nerves on only one side.
He proscribed cialis 20mg on Mondays and Fridays, I got my first
erection the night my catheter was removed but it was useless as soon
as my fiancées touched it I peed all over her and It went down. On the
same appointment I also received a four month shot of Lupron.
After two weeks of being on the Lupron I have never been able to
achieve a normal erection. Once or twice I have been what I would call
semi erect but the incontinence problem seems to be a problem. I have
no sexual desire at this time and probably won't until I am off the
lupron. I went back to work 1 week after surgery catheter and all
once. After the cathere was removed I was good with maybe 2 pads per
day within two month I was able to sleep with out a pad. I am now
going day and night with out a pad of any kind, I did have one
accident about a month ago I had been drinking and dancing that night
not sure if that caused the problem. I do not use pads anymore unless
I go to a party and do some drinking, I wonder if alcohol affects
others the same way guess I will just drink water unless I am at home.

Well that's my story I hope it may be of help to other cancer victims
I am going for my first fallow up with my doctor June 21st and praying
that the psa levels are good. They are planning to give me another
lupron shot at that time and I have not been able to find anyone that
have been put on that terrible stuff after surgery unless all the
cancer was not removed. I am wondering why he putting me on it if he
believes he got it all he said the margins were good. I would be
interested to hear from anyone that know more about this Lupron I
would most like to know how long after the last shot of lupron that I
might be interested in sex again.

I'm a Lupron "junkie" but I had Radiation and not Surgery. I'm sure that
someone in the group who knows more about your situation will come forward
with an explanation of Why-Lupron in your case.
You should be able to get an explanation from the Dr at your next checkup.
Don't be afraid to ask him about any concerns that you have. It is my
understanding that as long as you are on Lupron your PSA readings won't be
valid anyway.
Good luck and hope you get the info you need.

Some doctors apparently feel that the reduction of testosterone, which
feeds the PCa gives whatever the main course is a better chance.  It's
like trying to kill crabgrass (I've used this analogy before so
forgive me)while watering and ferilizing the rest of the yard...or at
least it didn't wok for me.  As for the sex I believe it is partly
between the ears.  ("Don't say you can't.  Can't is a four letter word
and we don't allow four letter words in my unit sh**bird!!")
Sorry if that seems course.  There are times I'm so depressed over the
lack of desire and drive I want to go hide and cry.

hi mike - gooooood mooooorrrrrrning vietnam!!!!

pca, RP, having sex after catheter pulled, and R & R, I & I  afterwards.
yeah, that sounds like been there, done that.

have you filed your claim with the v.a. yet.  you are entitled to
compensation for pca due to A.O.  and it's a good size chuck of money.

here's some news for ya.   it's common to pee when stimulated.  may not
happen to everyone, but it does happen and the does get drier.  same for
the pads.  alcohol causes your bladder muscle to relax more while under
the influence and presto - wet city.  your bladder valve is not the
original but this one that made up of different type of muscles and has
to be trained.  it is not as strong and about 1/2 the size of the
original.

i wonder why you got the lupron shot too if everything is as great as
they said.  ask for the path. report and that will say a lot.
you've got some good questions to ask him that you have came up with.

lupron will leave the system not that long after the four months is up
and the erections and desire will come back.  so, it's not gone, just
put to sleep.

your psa is be undetectable at your next doctor's visit.

give me an email if you have any questions about the v.a. compensation.

Hi, Mike....
You have every reason to expect that PSA test to be *undetectable*.....

Sounds like you took all the right steps.

I'm not sure why you are getting the Lupron, either.  I don't remember that
with anyone else.  Good question to ask your doctor....

Take care....
