I am needing some information regarding the irritation related to
EBRT.  I just completed my twenty fifth 'wide field' treatment Friday
and will begin the 'focused field' on Tuesday.  Just now the rectal
irritation they said would manifest has.  Ouch!  I'm more than happy
that my bowels are moving and regular but the level of discomfort is a
new one.  I feel like I wiped Jalepeno juice on that tender area.
I've tried all sorts of salve, ointments and goo but I feel like a
fire brand has....oh, never mind.  Can anyone tell me how long I can
expect this to last?  I can tolerate "discomfort"; just like the
slight discomfort of the biopsy.  Ha!

I've finished 36 of 42 IMRT and the burning started about a week ago. The
nurse recommended Destin or A&D ointment. I'm using the A&D right after a
bowel movement when the burning is at it's worst and it gives relief after a
few minutes. Don't know if the burning is contained in the stool itself as
it comes out of the bowel, but I'm going to ask on Tuesday. If the burning
is starting within the bowel then a med called Prevacid might neutralize it
before it reaches the rectum. I'll post what ever I find out. Hot soap and
water in the shower followed by the A&D ointment keeps me "tabasco" free
between bowel movements. Hope this helps.
I also started taking Pyridium last week for burning urine. You pee red, but
it seems to help and and stain comes out with a little bleach. I read where
this med also helps with burning stools since it will also color them red,
but haven't had any luck in that area yet-maybe the med takes a while.

Hubby finished 42 IMRT treatments on May 5 and has had a lot of problems
with his innards.  He is taking Pyridium (3 in the am and 2 at night) to
help with burning urination and it seems to work pretty well.  He is
taking stool softeners for constipation and to combat rectal bleeding,
and as a result has painful diarrhea most of the time.  We bought him
some hemmoroid wipes and they help a little.  The Dr gave him some
"special care creme" that is a vitamin enhanced aloe vera gel.  The
thing that seems to work best is an OTC cream containing dibucaine
(recommended by the nurse).  It is an analgesic and takes care of the
worst of the burning almost immediately.  There are quite a few creams
containing this, we just bought the generic one.

You may not go through this as long as hubby - he has had lesser
problems with this before due to other problems, so don't despair!

I think things started to get better for me within a week
or so after the end of radiation.  If I remember correctly,
the problem was completely resolved by around 6 weeks.
I used a ton of Preparation H, and ordinary skin creams
around the outside.

It takes a lot of trying doesn't it?  But you seem to be
doing a good job.

Good luck.

I was prescribed Proctasol.  It worked to some extent.

26th dose which is also a narrower field that the doctor calls my
'fosa' or focal target.  (12 more to go) He said that because of the
target field being smaller the irritation will diminish.  I also asked
about how long the effects of the radiation on the cells last
recalling a similar question on another thread.  (Yes, I would like to
avoid another Lupron shot) As he pointed out the irradiated cells are
still trying to divide and regenerate up to eight weeks sometimes
longer after the last treatment though the cancerous cells split and
die.  I sure as heck don't want to feed dying cancer cells
testosterone. So I guess I shouldn't complain about getting a second
four month shot as I see so many others on this NG that get the shot
for a lot longer.
On the light hearted side of it I have been in situations where the
'pucker-factor' was high but this lend a new meaning to that term.
lol

I can't help to see some humor in this ordeal.

My narrow field started on the 29th treatment (of 37). From now on, my
treatments
will not aim the radiation thru my rectum. Instead of coming from 4
directions per treatment
(top, bottom, left side, right side), the narrow field has 6 (left side,
upper left, lower
left, right side, upper right, lower right). The four new angles avoid the
rectum, and
like you mention are tighter in focus. My rectum is already feeling bit
happier.

I mentioned earlier about trying Prevacid. I had some left over from a
prescription I had last year for high stomach acid so yesterday I took one.
This morning's poop session was burn free-first time in a week. I'll check
with my Doc when I go for Rad today, but I'm sure he'll say it won't do any
harm.

Ain't it funny what we take for granted until we are deprived of it?
There are several things I like to have back that I took for granted
before this whole adventure started.  I don't think I need to mention
one in particular but I'd settle for bladder/bowel function without
irritation for now.  Taking stuff for reflux is a daily thing for me
and it hasn't helped me yet.
Hey, congratulations! Here's to more burn-free sessions.

I know exactly how you feel. I've just hit 30 of 37 EBRT treatments. A week
ago Sunday I
thought for sure I had swallowed a bottle of habanero sauce myself. I swear
I
could see the smoke rings coming out. When it was time for the paper work,
it felt like 80 grit sandpaper, with shards of glass embedded in it.

My RadOnc suggested using the Aquaphor (reminds me of that greasy kid
stuff).
It has helped alleviate some of the pain, though he said to wash it off
before the treatment,
since the radiation can be absorbed in that area. Also he wrote me a
prescription
for Anucort-HC 25mg. It is a suppository with hydro-chordisone and other
pain relieving
medication.

Also he suggested soaking in a hot tub twice a day. I don't have time in the
morning so
I just take a warm shower.

This sure is a pain in the butt!!!

Even with the antacids (prevacid) the burning came back and got worse-so I
saw my RadOnc during a treatment visit. He said he would give me a scrip for
stuff that would heal and take care of the burning too.
Proctofoam HC 1%
Went to the drug store and got a tiny (10gram) aerosol container with a
small syringe to apply it with. 10 grams of the stuff is good for about 14
applications and should be used 3-4 times a day. Doc said I should use it
for at least several weeks after I complete Rads next week and put me down
for 4 refills.
How much?? I'm glad you asked. $ 55.00 after my drug card discount for 14
squirts that (if I didn't waste any) would last about 3 1/2 days. It does a
good job but is another Drug Co rippoff.
Proctofoam HC consists of 1% hydrocortisone and 1% pramoxine - and that's
all folks.
So after firing off a very nasty e-mail to the Drug Co that makes the stuff,
I went back to the Drug Store and got a tube of 1% hydrocortisone ($ 2.49)
and a tube of 1% pramoxine ($ 3.99). I mixed equal amounts in an empty film
canister. Been using it for 2 days now with good results . Will keep you
updated. For less than 7 bucks I'll have enough to treat every sore butt on
this newsgroup.

Very ingenious - I'm impressed! :-)))

You REALLY are a pain in the posterior - literally! <LOL>

Good luck continuing to deal with your side affects.

Hmmm, wonder if that's the same meds that's prescribed for 'roids? I
could use alittle of that if it is. Thanks for the update!

I did some of the same investigative work.  Take for example the great
Preparation H with Hydrocortisone 1%.  It has a bunch of inactive
ingredients and the 1% Hydrocortisone for $5 whereas Wal-Mart's Equate
'Anti-Itch' ointment with 1% hydrocortisone is $1.68 with some of the
same inactive ingredients.  Just as I thought I had th ewhole dilemma
worked out and stopped the fire my onco-rad changed the beam to a much
smaller one which totally avoid the rectum.  Now I don't know if I
found a good answer to the rpoblem or if the reduction of the beam
gave me relief or both.  It's not nearly as good as yours and I am
proud of you.  I Read those active ingredients instead of the ads
also-yeah!  Heck,  I even tried Bohannons Butt Paste (BBP Rash
Relief)that is used on babies.  So, to make it short and sweet I don't
really know which worked or if they all contributed.  Ockhams razor be
damned!  It ain't burning anymore.  Now if I could get past the
irritated bladder and this $*&@#!! hormone stuff...lol.
