Hi
First post. I am 2 weeks post RRP -- All is going rather well (Thank
God!) except for a large bulge near the bottom of my incision -- did
not appear until a couple of days ago and, maybe, it's getting bigger:
more than an inch across and bulging out about 1/2 inch from the
surrounding abdomen, and some pain there; by phone, surgeon does not
believe it is an incisional hernia but rather swelling around incision
(I also had lots of scrotal/penile swelling which has already
subsided). Anyone else experience this? Any advice.
Thanks!

I had scrotal swelling, but that should not have anything to do with
incision swelling.

Well yes, they tie off the sutures at the end.  But I noticed that
immediately, not after two weeks.

That swelling would not be related to the normal "edema" down below.

Wonder if you have a little infection.  Is the area hot to the touch?

Sometimes you need to get your docs attention if you think it's something
worthy.  They would rather wait and not waste their time with trivial stuff,
if at all possible. With all the anti-biotics pre and post surgery, ny guess
is that it's not an infection.

Hey Me!

All things can go right or wrong.  I had staples.  Had to protect them and
my incision while showering.
What did you do while showering?
You are supposed to wrap the area with plastic wrap, and shower and not get
the incision wet.
I used tape and plastic wrap;;;;;;keeps incision dry, and washes off the
rest....
I would make sure when washing and such, that the area compromised, be
dry.......
What do I know.

Good wishes, and walk, run, and enjoy life.

Hope you fare the best.

I too had staples when I had my lymph node dissection.

I didn't stay inactive long enough and stressed the incision. This caused
internal bleeding. The symptoms were swelling above the incision and
hardness along part of it. Went to the doctor for it. He put me on an
anti-biotic and lectured me to take it easy.  It cleared up in time.  Boy! I
sure hated those staples.

Good luck,
Larry

I have no idea what it is.  But as jk said, sometimes you
need to work harder to get a doctor's attention.

I'd call him and say you want to come in right away and
have him look at it.  Unless it's started to subside by tomorrow
morning, I'd insist.  It will only take him one minute to look at
it.  If he's ever seen anything like that before, he'll know just
what it is and whether something needs to be done about it.
If he hasn't, then he better really take it seriously.

Well, I think everyone probably answered your question. Get the doctor to
look at it. I will say I called the doctor's office many years ago when I
bumped my leg on a filing cabinet. The area ballooned and it scared me. I
called the office and they couldn't give me an appointment. So I just showed
up a few minutes before he closed for the day. The doctor looked at it and
laughed, he promised I wasn't dying. He told me to go home, get off my leg
and ice it down that night. It would be fine in a few days. He didn't charge
me, it wasn't exactly an office visit but it sure gave me some peace of
mind. And right now you need the same peace of mind. So have the doctor look
at it or at least the doctor's nurse.

I'd look at your leg for free too Bev!

I had swelling in the scrotum.  It went down after a few days.  It was
tender down there, but not painful.

I would get a doctor to look at the bulge.  That does not sound normal
to me.  I have not heard others mention "swelling around the
incision".

Good luck to you.
Thank you.

Oh also -- THANKS to all of you who recommended to keep bugging the
doc to see me -- this is clearly the right call when something is
wrong and you just get a brush-off ("it's nothing") from the doc/team.
No none had mentioned -- until I kept calling -- that there was an
Urgent Care Center if you *really* need to be seen and the doc wasn't
agreeing to see you. I also needed the peace of mind of simply having
a doc look at it -- even if it had turned out to be nothing.
