This was a classic case of calling the surgeon, getting a nurse, the
nurse translated what I said to the doc, and the doc told her it was
nothing to worry about. I knew it was *not* nothing to worry about.
The bulge/lump was not getting smaller and was red and started to feel
warm. I called a 3rd or fourth time and finally the nurse who was on
duty *that* day, after sounding a bit annoyed that I was still
calling, told me to go to the hospital Urgent Care Center. There the
nurse and attending doc clearly saw *immediately* that it had to be
looked at. They called the surgeon and one of his Fellows came to look
at it -- she said it was infected and/or a pocket of fluid and blodd.
She incised it along my surgical incision and drained it -- took a lot
of pads to absorb everything -- now there is a huge hole there about
an inch around and an inch-and-a-1/2 into my abdomen. It's still
oozing somewhat and I have to keep gauze/tape on it. She said to wash
it in the shower and keep gauze on it... it's pretty scary looking ...
and it's supposed to now take weeks to heal. whew...

I sure am glad you were persistent. No tellin' how bad it might have
gotten. You widow would have gotten rich off it.

Glad you got to see a doctor... and got some treatment for this. Hope you
will have a speedy recovery from this setback. Take care... keep us posted!

Amazing that your doctor - and his nurse - were so cavalier about the whole
thing.
Anyway, at least you did a good job of doing the right thing and getting it
taken care of.
Congratulations!

As has been said over and over and over again in this forum, you *must be
your own advocate*. Sad, but true. Sometimes, doctors just don't have the
time to take you seriously.... or try to make light of some complaint you
may have. But we have to continue to keep an eye on our numbers and other
conditions.... and be ready to be very persistent in getting some attention
when we feel something is not right!
Take care, all.....

Glad you took my advice. As I said, in the docs defense, most of us are
wimps and overreact to most everything. If they saw everyone that called
up, they wouldn't have time to do too many surgeries. In your case it was
legitimate.
