Since my prostatectomy in Dec 2002, all my PSA readings have been >0.01. My
latest reading was 0.01 without the > sign. I rang the lab and they said it
wasn't a typo and that result was an exact one.
They wouldn't give me any more info and said I should talk to my doc which I
am going to do next week but I am wondering if this represents a rise,
albeit miniscule, in my PSA?

hi ron - at this point, i wouldn't lose much sleep over it. your lab is
using the ultra sensitive psa test and there could be something in the
testing procedure that was different this time that gave a different
result. if in doubt have it ran again. now, if have jumped from <.01
to .1, then that's a different story.

I agree. I believe in the ultrasensitive test but you have to fight
the temptation to be ultrasensitive about the small changes that will
show up.

I would say no. I have read that no process is accurate below 0.04, but I
have also been corrected on this site. I can tell you that my urologist, in
whom I have great trust, said, "anything less than 0.1 is virtually
undetectable and right where we want to be." I have read that some uros
will not address a post-treatment PSA of less than 0.2. My uro did not
begin salvation RT until I went to 0.27 and then 0.37 and did not treat my
next increase until I went to 0.21 and then 0.32.
So, if you count all that as being as it should be, then you first need not
worry until you are above 0.1 and then you need not worry until you have a
historical reference of going from <0.1 to something higher then to
something higher still.

By ">" I assume you meant "<".
I'd bet that there are different people working at the lab on
different days. One of them said "<.01" and one said ".01",
but just because that's the way two different people write it
up. I bet there was no difference in the test results - in each
case a more intelligible statement might simply have been
"undetectable".
The doctor's staff wouldn't give you more info because they're
deathly afraid of telling something incorrect to somebody and
over the years have had any tendency to interpret results
whipped out of them.

Thanks for the replies, folks, I appreciate them.
After my prostatectomy in Dec 2002, I took a multivitamin everyday to try
and help repair the nerve damage. That MV contained saw palmetto. I stopped
taking it six months ago when a friend warned me about its possible masking
effect. When I saw the slight change in the PSA I thought perhaps the saw
palmetto had been the culprit.
I still can't believe that after all the pre- and post-prostatectomy
research I did, I missed reading about this masking effect of saw palmetto.
Regards,
Ron
