I have been on Zoladex ( an injection every three months) for over a
year. It has kept my PSA at <0.1. Nobody on this NG ever mentions
taking Zoladex. Everyone seems to be taking Lupron. I know Zoladex
puts the cancer cells to "sleep" so to speak. What does Lupron do and
should I ask my VA doctor about it? I think that the VA tends to be a
little out of touch with better treatments. I don't think that it is
a money thing. My shots are free and I pay $7.00 for all of my
medications. All in all I get extremely good service from the VA. It
is clean, the doctors are professional and friendly and I like it
better than the Kaiser I had when I was working.

Hello there,
Your VA dr. can't be that out of touch with the treatments because my father
has been receiving Zoladex shots from Mayo Clinic. Congrats on your low
psa!!!!!!!!

I made a post some time ago about the side effects I was having with Zoladex
and I reiterate them below.
A side effect that I have and nobody seems to have mentioned it, are
headaches. I get them every 2/3 days. My doc tells me they are migraineous
although I have never suffered from migraine. Small amounts of alcohol can
trigger them and two glasses of red wine will give me a severe headache and
nausea for 24 hours.
Two months ago I changed onto Prostap(Lupron). The headaches went. The
problems with alcohol went. The needle used for the injection is a little
one as opposed the 12 inch one used for Zoladex :-). The efficacy of Lupron
seems to be the same as Zoladex. On the whole it does the same job and for
me, the side effects are better.

bj, Gary Nichols, Jamie Buckley, John Anderson, John Preston, John Nikkols,
and Scrapiro are all members and Zolodex users.
There are three places, as I recall, where HT works. I believe both Lupron
and Zolodex work to stymie testosterone production. I don't know why one is
prescribed over the other.

Here's a quote from phoenix5, which seems to be back up:
"Three LHRH agonists are available in the US, of which two are
widely used in the treatment of patients with prostate cancer.
They are both synthetic analogs of a hormone known as luteinizing
hormone releasing hormone. These two pharmaceuticals are
leuprolide acetate (Lupron/TAP Pharmaceuticals) and goserelin
acetate (Zoladex/Zeneca Pharmaceuticals). To all intents and
purposes, from the point of view of the patient, the differences
between these two pharmaceuticals are minor and it probably does
not matter which of these two products your physician prescribes
for you once the decision has been taken to give you this form of
hormonal therapy."
Hope that helps.

I think that Zoladex is the norm in the UK. I have the 3 monthly
shots (less visits).
Will be having 2nd cycle of chemo on Wednesday.

Had 2nd cycle yesterday. No adverse side effects yet, white cell count
did drop substancially but bounced back up nicely in time for 2nd cycle
to be started.
1st PSA testing will be either next week or the week after - whatever
the outcome of that, better results are expected after the 4th cycle.
Will let you know as soon as we know.

Thanks, take care.

Ford vs. Chevy.
"My shots are free ...."
Well, they are free to you except for the portion of your (and my)
Federal taxes that fund the VA. I don't mean this personally, but the
attitude that healthcare is free or cheap is one reason that
healthcare insurance is so high. I am considering RT that will not
cost me anything (and probably not help me either) but the cost is a
factor in my decision.

Hi Dude,
What was your PSA prior to your first Zoladex and how did they confirm the
cancer (biopsy, I presume). Was it contained or had it spread?
I've been on Zoladex since February. I haven't experienced any headaches. I
feel warm from time to time and my sex life is next to nil. but that's
expected.
In addition to the hormone shots, I completed EBRT recently and will get the
seed implants next month.
Good luck with your treatments.
