I'm on webtv so send my posts to alt.support.cancer.prostate
.
My brother needs to consult the group from his computer.  What e-mail
address would he use?

He would use a News Group Mail,

alt.support.cancer.prostate

Try this.
Wish you all well!

There are two ways I know about to participate in a newsgroup.

One is to connect to a news server.  To do that you need
the following:

1. News reader/writer software.  This can either be a
dedicated newsreader program like Forte Agent, or
can be a combined newsreader/email program like
Outlook Express (what I'm using here) or Mozilla or
Netscape Mail.

2. A news server account with a userid and password.
These are normally provided by your internet service
provider.  If your brother calls or emails the tech support
people at his ISP, they should be able to provide him
with this, and with instructions for how to get his newsreader
to talk to the server.  This configuration can be a slight pain
to the non-technical person, but it only has to be done
once and from then on you can easily read and post to
any newsgroup on the server for years afterwards.

The other approach is via a web interface.  One that
I am familiar with is Google.  Go to
  http://groups.google.com
Or go to http://ww.google.com and click "Groups".

Then go to alt.support.cancer.prostate - either by
navigating through the menus, or just by typing it
in the search box.

From there, you can click a message to read it,
click "Post a follow-up to this message" to answer
it, or click "Post a new message to ..." from the
search page to start a new subject thread.

If you try to post a message, Google will ask for
a userid and password.  Since you won't have them,
you click the button to sign up and create them.

There are other web based news servers in addition
to Google, but I haven't used any of them.

Your brother should not be alarmed if he uses Google
and his posts don't show up immediately.  There can
be a several hour time delay between a posting and
its first appearance on the servers.

The above is the German news server I (and a lot of others) use......it is
free and very good.
