Greetings to a special group.Well, the bone mineral density test (DEXA)
indicated that I had osteopena which as I understand it , is one step
below osteoporosis. However my primary physician prescribed Fosamax
several years ago,so I suppose it is under control.
For the first time, my psa results(undetectable <.1 ) listed a
testosterone figure of 13L. It would be helpful if someone would tell
what that means.
Curtis,Heather,Alan,Steve and all the others, you are doing a tremendous
service.A 4.0(Navy lingo)to you.

I don't know what the "L" is...  Hormone treatment is supposed to keep your
testostrerone "below castrate level", which is 50.  Mine is less than 7.

There may be things you can do to help with this.
When I was on Lupron I tried taking extra calcium supplements
and also kept up an exercise program as much as I could.
Calcium + exercise are prescribed for folks at risk of
osteoporosis in general and may also be of benefit to
those who are at risk of it due to hormone therapy.

Like Danny, I also don't know what the L means.  I have read
different claims about what is the "normal" range for testosterone,
ranging from 170-250 on the low side to 700-1250 on the high.
I think it's measured in nanograms per deciliter.  There are also
measures of "bound" and "free" testosterone.

My testosterone got down to 20 after 4 months on Lupron.

13 sounds good to me and means that very little testosterone
is available to feed the cancer cells.

Incidentally, the lower your PSA goes on hormone therapy,
the better.  Dr. Strum, in his book, says that the more effect
it has on PSA, the longer it's likely to work for you.  So you're
having a good response to it.

Best of luck.

I suspect the "L" is for "low".  On most of my blood work there are
annotations for H's and L's, where appropriate - including the L next to
Testosterone!

Hi scrapiro,

I don't know about the testosterone value, but you've got it wrong on
the DEXA result.
Osteopenia is one step above (better than) osteoporosis.  For those
who care, on a DEXA scale, osteopenia is defined as 1.5 standard
deviations less than age expected value and osteoporosis is 2.5
standard deviations lower.  The Fosamax is a good idea.  Osteopenia is
better than osteoporosis, however, and I thought you should know.
Good luck. CPW

Then what he meant to say was:
one step before osteoporosis ????
