What a wonderful group we have here. Discussion helps us all.
Am 65, have had the procedures, am well and most things are
working just fine ! Pee like a racehorse.
But....sex isn't what it used to be. Have tried Viagra and it
does pretty good, but have to deal with spontaneity. Just have
to plan ahead. So, was wondering if Cialis might be a better
solution. Suppose to work faster and last ..much.. longer.
Any opinions, experiences with it ?
Lots of comments on the pump in the group. With use of it, over
the long haul, is its use likely to restore the system to its
former self ?  Are the rings that are used not extremely uncomfortable ?
It seems to me after viewing some of the pump web sites, the ring
would be really painful.  Or is this not the case ?
Last but not least, nearly every morning, almost first thing after
waking, I get a lot of prostatic fluid leakage. Its only a minor
inconvenience, it only occurs in the morning and is not really that
big a deal I suppose, I'm just wondering if this is normal ? There is
no sexual sensation with this, it just happens. Could it have something
to do with a drastic drop in normal sexual activity ?
I know, lots of questions, but I am attempting to return to a more or
less normal life and am curious of problems/options available.

I've used the big three - Cialis, Viagra, Levitra. The jury is still out - I
don't know how much more my *sexuality* is going to deteriorate. But so far,
I like Viagra and Levitra. Spontaneity isn't an issue. After 34 years of
marriage, we're capable of planning an hour or so ahead and we don't need
the 36 hour *when the time is right will you be ready* B.S.
Ask your urologist for samples - so far, it hasn't cost us a nickel.

Good luck with whatever you choose and let us know how it goes.

I assume you had surgery? How long since? I know for myself after 18
months, it works fine, but is still improving consistently, but very slowly.
I guess the nerves take a long time to wake up and connect. I wouldn't be
surprised if it will take 3 years to be really back to normal.

hi zork - i remember you from the BPH newsgroup.  you are welcome here.

i will try to answer some of your questions.  first, viagra vs cialis.
some people have better luck on one than the other, but it seems to be
an individual thing as to how well they work.

on the pump - you're 65, not 25.  restore to former self?  well, i
wouldn't go that far, but hey, it won't hurt to try.   the rings are not
painful.

on you prostate leakage.  had sex lately?  seems to be a common report
from men who haven't  the body has a way of emptying itself.  some men
will have a discharge from a bowel movement too.

hope these answers helped,

My husband has been a chronic pain patient (since the '80's) due to
other problems than the recently diagnosed prostate cancer.

His Dr's have found that a combination of pain meds (currently
Hydrocodone, previously Darvon and Morphine Sulfate) combined with
"mood elevators" like Paxil, Trazodone and Elavil (tried Vallium but it
caused hallucinations) has helped that.  Add to that the muscle
relaxants like Flexeril or Soma, and it kinda works.  It seems to be
trial and error to get the right combination.  Yes, it will work for a
while and then they develop a resistance and you have to change around,
but maybe this will give you some ideas to take to the Dr.

I have no ideas about lower costs.  Hubby is a vet and even so the RX is
costing over $170 (at $7 a pop) per month.  Definitely, if he is a vet,
get him into the VA system!

No Prostate fluid leaking.....That is pee.
The pump is for those that Viagra and Cialis does not work.
You can play with it.  Bands are optional.  The largest ot the smallest.
Your choice.
You are peeing yourself, and that is not prostate fluid!

I am 55 years old, good health and shape and in my tenth month
following RP. Viagra, Cialis and levitra all have been tried. At first
I wasn't too keen on Viagra as the blue flashing, stomach burn and
headache diminished the whole scheme of things. Then my doctor gave me
some Levitra which didn't have the side effects Viagra did but it
didn't seem to have the same end result.  Then came Cialis and the
headaches and upset stomach came back howver it did last longer and
this allows more spontenaity(sic). I started using an over-the-counter
reflux and some tylenol about thirty minutes before dosing myself with
either Viagra or Cialis.  This might be seen as over medicating but...
I am now using Viagra 50 mg.  The pescription is for 100 mg as they
will charge you the same no matter the strength, so I cut them in
half.  This works for me and as we all know everyone is different.
Hope this answer sheds some light.

Just curious re: the pump that if over time the pump will 'restore'
some of my former functions.
Thanks again

=============

hi zork - giving the best answer that i can to your question, i would
have to say in the following manner.

i've had the prostate removed.  after surgery, everything is "dead"  so,
i treated it like an injury and used the pump to do mechanically, what
by body could not do.  i kept this up just as you would giving someone
CPR - until they can do it on their own.  well, the functions are coming
back.

it is my belief, that the pump pulled the oxygenated blood into the
organ and nerves, which promoted the healing.  so, with this said, i
would say two things to you.

one, it can't hurt you, so go for it.

two, the only thing it would do for an outcome would be an improvement.
i don't see any negative side to using the pump.

We are hoping that the pump will help restore what was damaged. Of course
what and why we are doing is a little different from those who have had
RP's. By forcing the blood through the damaged area we hope that eventually
the area will repair itself enough to work without the pump. We look at it
as exercising the area. The difference is we aren't talking about muscle but
rather tissue and blood vessels.

Hi Ho Silver - 04 May 2004 15:09 GMT
In my experience....the rings are not uncomfortable at all; although they do
need to be taken off after a half hour or so, to allow circulation, but can
be reapplied after some minutes.  They don't leave a mark or cause a
problem, but I imagine that misuse could be harmful.  I can't say that I am
restored to 'a former self', but then I am 67 and no longer have a prostate
to speak of (I had seeds) so I don't expect to turn back the clock.
However, in some ways things are much better; I don't have to worry about
not achieving or 'losing' the erection, since the pump and rings assure
success.  In addition, orgasms are much much more intense than formerly.
Also, no sticky ejaculate mess, although there is just enough fluid to for
the feeling of ejaculating...all in all the pump enhances the experience
greatly.  Of course, as they say in newsgroups, YMMV.

My husband tried Cialis once and for all its efffect it may as well
have been a placebo. Nothing happened at all!  Viagra works well - he
breaks the 100mg tablets into three doses.

My urologist gave me some Cialis samples.  My problem is that sometimes
I can manage without anything and occasionally, even with the drug, I
can just barely make it.  My wife thinks I am using the drug as a
psychological crutch.  With that in mind, it seems to me that Cialis
does work for me more or less as advertised.  I would say that it takes
somewhat more than the minimum half hour, but its effect does extend
into the next day and maybe even the full 36 hours.  On the other hand,
it does have one additional side effect, in addition to those of Viagra.
It can induce muscle pain 12 or more hours after you take it.  Since I
tend to have muscle pains for a variety of other reasons, I can't tell
if that has happened to me or not.

Certainly not in all cases.  But it certainly can't hurt.

> Are the rings that are used not extremely uncomfortable ?

I used the kind where the ring is slid off the cylinder and snaps on
your erect penis.  That snap is certainly disconcerting, but it never
caused any damage as far as I can tell, and I used the pump for some 18
months.  The only time it was uncomfortable was when part of my scrotum
got caught  under the ring.   That can be avoided by making sure none of
the scrotum gets sucked into the tube.  However, even with the ring
squeezing my scrotum, I was able to function adequately, despite the
discomfort, and there was no apparent damage afterwards.

Once it is on, you are aware it is there, but it is not so distracting
that you can't enjoy what you are doing.

I don't have a prostate, so I can't help you there.
