When I had my RRP I was approached to donate my prostate and
seminal vessels to some company in Massachusetts that would do
reasearch "that could save lives". I have never heard anyone else on
the ng mention anything like that. I am sure that state laws vary on
the subject, and who knows what is buried in the forms that one signs
before the surgery, but I was just curious if anyone else was
approached with a similar proposition?
Thank you.

Same here. Had mine removed at Massachusetts General Hospital which is an
affiliate of Harvard. I was asked if I was willing to donate the materials
that I left behind for research, and was more than glad to do so.

Same at University of Washington. Even took a sample from Chris's hip bone
for another study.

I had mine removed at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. I
understand they keep all tumours for research purposes. Don't know
whether that means the whole thing, but since PC is generally
multi-nodular (lots of little tumours) I suspect they keep the whole
thing. I think that, as new theories come up, they can look back at
all this material and test them against lots of samples.
Either way, I sure didn't want it!

Hi Neighbour......
My brother-in-law had his radiation treatments at PMH......my husband had
the HDR radiation at Sunnybrook. We sure do have some good cancer hospitals
in this city.

good question - i don't know. mine was done at scott air force base and
since it's a gov't hospital, i don't know what happens to it. i didn't
sign anything or was made aware of my prostate being used for research.
i guess it is a question i can ask the surgeon the next time i see him.

Mine was removed at Water Reed, and I did sign permission forms.

I had my gall bladder out a couple years ago and the surgeon
gave me a picture of it and a urine specimen container with some of
the gall stones. I meant to ask the urologist if I could get a
picture of my prostate, just out of curiosity to see what the thing
really looks like, but I forgot (I had other things on my mind at the
time).
That makes me think - one of you new guys ask your doctor if
he/she will give you a picture of the prostate. Maybe someone would
post the jpeg. I don't mean to be morbid. Just curious to see what
that little devil that causes so much trouble looks like. All I have
seen at my doctor's office are drawings, and I have dial up so the
videos that are out there take forever to download.
Thank you.

Don't they slice it up doing the pathology? I think they do that pretty
quickly post-op. It wouldn't be much to look at after that!

I signed something similar, but the nurse said it was to see how the results
of radiation treatment turned out. Didn't make sense to me, since I was
having an RRP, but I figured what the heck - I sure don't have any use for
it!
